Post Boykins?
Ive heard of a few people using boykins as duck dogs. Was wondering if anybody on here has any experience working with Boykins as duck dogs?

gracie.jpgHunted one for a long time..........RESEARCH before you buy if you go that way.....go with PROVEN hunting stock and train in a soft manner........think Robert Milner or Bill Hillmann......these dogs are educated not trained.

They are fiercly loyal and fiercly un-forgiving.
I learned the latter the hard way.......I put my hand to mine ONE time and she never forgave me till the day she died. Held a crudge for ten years.

I have a real nice male right now that absolutely loves birds. He is awesome in the dove field. I will have him in the duck blind this year and he should do well. He should be have his finished titles by next summer. Have not been able to run him in test this year but he can do the work. He's only 10 months old.

WOW..........now that is some hang time.......LOL
I have heard that story on Milner's book before. I really like his philosphy over all and appreciate the opperant behavior techniques.

Bill Hillman's "puppy" video is also spectacular for softer dogs.

I have a 19 month old Wachtelhund now and started early puppy training with the clicker..........I think a boykin would respond well to that as well.

Very smart dogs I got one about a year ago best dog ever and they are smaller than a lab so you don't mind them inside. I agree you don't train them you educate

I have two boykins a 6 year old male and 5 month old female off him. I love mine, use him for duck, dove, and quail. The pup picked up 12 doves last Sunday not bad for 5 month old. She's not finished by any means butl doing well. They are great dogs.

Out of curiosity, are they as prone to big ear problems like the cocker spaniels?

Ive got some ear cleaning solution that I use to flush Roux's ears after she swims. Without that stuff, her ears get nasty.

I remember all three cocker spaniels we had growing up. Had to watch their ears closely

Ain't no cocker that's for sure. They are prone to ear problems bt not even close to dam inbred cockers. The ears are set higher on the head, and much shorter than most spaniels. Clean em reg just as any dog and be good to go.

I took her on 2 teal hunts when i was by myself. I shot 8 birds and she retrieved 4 of them that were close. We were in heavy lilly pads so it was hard for her to see, and she was very unsure about everything and moving slow.

I think she will be a good hunting dog.

Keep the hair inside the ear shaved real close, and it will help with the infections.
