Post First mud motor
Been a long time looker and have been wanting a mud motor for a while now. Being from Missouri mud motors are not very common so I took the plunge and decided to build. With the help of Mad Motor Plans and repetitively hitting the search button on here, me and a couple buddies built 2 long tails in the last month. I built mine using the 420cc from harbor freight and put it behind a 14x36 revited alumacraft. I took it out this morning on its first real test run down through the backwaters and shallows. With me and another guy(a lil over 300lbs total) we were bumping the gps at 17 and could run 16 consistent and had no problem blowing right through spots with just a couple inches of water. All in all I am very pleased with it and can't wait for opening day next Saturday.

Congrats! If you don't have a kill swiltch, put one on and wear the lanyard! My first rig was a 1436 w/18 HP GD LT, so go easy on the turns, balance your load, know your limits, make sure you have running lights, get an auto bilge (manual as backup), take all necessary tools, fuses, xtra plugs, grease gun, PFD's, etc. Above all, have fun!

Looks great! I ordered the mad mud motor plans this weekend and ordered the 420 harbor freight engine today. Did you have to make any mods to the plans to use the larger motor?

I used a lil heavier plate for base plate and most bracing. If you think it will be strong enough make it stronger. Build a solid permanent transom mount, I broke them C clamps like the 3rd time out, but I beat the stout out of mine in mud and lots stumps.

My plans arent in yet but Ive been thinking about reworking the c clamps. Did you use bushings for your driveshaft or did you use a bearing up top?

looks good did you go with a 60'' shaft or 72'' for your build? Ive built a few 6.5 hp long tails but my next will be that same motor you used. what prop did you go with

Bushings, 72 in shaft, and 8x4 prop... I would not use C clamps, most are cast made in China junk and won't handle the torque of the motor. If you plan on adding any mods a bigger prop may be needed, I've messed with my governor and I think I could use a bigger prop, its like the last 1/4 of the throttle doesn't do much, the motor revs and spins faster but its like the prop is just spinning out, I don't know if that means bigger prop or what.

I ordered an 8x4 prop from back #water. Im trying to decide on which route to take with the motor mount. Im considering ordering the premade mount from bog# hog. Im going to run a flange bearing at the top of the shaft. Your setup will be almost identical to mine. Im putting it on a 1436 jon boat as well. What degree did you set your shaft at?

15*, I believe is what I set mine at. That's where I got my prop.

I called and asked. They will sell parts from their units. Unlike go devil who requires you to own a unit to sell you parts.(boo)
