 Backwater Swomp 35hp LT
Does anyone know if Backwater mud motors are good compared to other LT out there? Their prices are very reasonable. I'm thinking about getting a new one and would like some suggestions.

They are the cadillac of longtails. I love mine and great people to deal with. They have so much to offer and a great price.

How does the Swomp 23 compare to a 23 hp GDLT?

 Re: ******* Swomp 35hp LT
It's faster on the same boat. It's a lot less of a physical battle to drive. There's hardly any maintenance on these motors. Every 25 hours or so it MAY take one or two pumps of grease. But that's it. No leaky bearings or seals. No need to worry about fishing line or anything getting into your seals and tearing them up. The way they are designed, it is literally impossible for sand or fishing line or anything else to work its way into the seals or bearings. If anyone is ever in the Memphis or West Tennessee area and wants to see what these things are all about, I'm more than willing to take you out for a demo. If you've got any other more specific questions just ask. I'm not necessarily putting Go-Devil down. They've got a product that has done well and served a purpose for many many years. But IMO if you're looking at buying a new long tail, you simply cannot beat the SWOMP.

 Re: ******* Swomp 35hp LT
I don't wanna hijack this post but how durable is the interchangable handle? Does the motor have an alternator? The motor looks very stout otherwise.

 Re: ******* Swomp 35hp LT
Like many here, I started with a GD LT- it was the first mud toy on the block- and it was very sound and reliable- but I must say my 2004 MB 27 HP LT was a step up from GD's. I welcome the BackH2O and its refinements to the LT platform- it still is the ticket in my shallow, hard bottom marsh where I run. The simplicity of the LT and reliability is great, and also much lesser cost- certainly in big water, with heavy loads, long runs, the shortail is supreme no question. Unless MB comes through with the SLT, I believe my next LT will be a BackH2O.
