Re: pro drive or gator tail
If you don't mind explaining your reasoning so i can have an idea. I have a buddy that has a PD and it seems to work well. I rode in a gator tail this weekend and was pretty impressed. Reverse on the GTR seems like it would be a lot easier. Just wanted some thoughts.

Re: pro drive or gator tail
I have a PD and just got into crawfishing recreationally. I will honestly say that it's the first time I've been frustrated with the ratcheting reverse, and I have a pin puller. It would be nice to have instant reverse, but I got used to approaching the traps more deliberately and got it figured out quickly. Now, if I was going to crawfish for a living and that's my primary use of my boat the GTR all the way. But, FPR is more useful to me for hunting than instant reverse while crawfishing.

Re: pro drive or gator tail
If you are running any amount of traps, you will lose a lot of time with the Prodrive. I'm not a prodrive hater, but for crawfishing, its not even an option. For every trap I (we) run we approach the trap in forward gear, then to neutral, straight to reverse to stop the boat. In a prodrive you would have to spin the LU twice. A full run is 800 traps, so 00:04 x 2 x 800 / 60 = 106.6. So, theoretically it would take 1hr 46mins longer in a PD to run the same traps I run with a GTR. Sure you can run a chain, but a chain is not enough to stop the boat once you put a load in it. Another nice thing is the floating handle. I really don't like the fixed handle standing up all day. Now if you were running traps on bayou banks, a prodrive reverse would be cool, but the point of buying a mudmotor for crawfishing is to get where the outboards can't. I don't know what they run in the upper basin, but in the spillway i bet its a 4 or maybe even 5:1 ratio GTRs to PDs nowadays. The prodrives have really dropped off in the last couple years.

Re: pro drive or gator tail
If your crawfishing and needing to step alot of weight. I would suggest something like a 20'x42-48" wide skiff.

Re: pro drive or gator tail
42" is a little narrow for me, but it works MY perfect skiff is 20x46

Re: pro drive or gator tail
That skiff steps a load and runs good. Brother puts a little more flare in his sides, so there is still seemingly alot of space in the boat for being 42" wide.
That skiff was running 28 with a stock Pro-Drive, 3/16th bottom.

Re: pro drive or gator tail
Prodrives reverse is made to get you out of a bind. Gtrs reverse is good for backing off the trailer and stuff but i have the hydrolic reverse and i love it. It doesnt take long to go in reverse but still gtr is faster to go in reverse.

This is most likely the most civil PD vs GTR thread I've ever seen...maybe we CAN all just get along. Where's DDM and tchauvin when you need them?

Re: pro drive or gator tail
went crawfishing with a buddy today and he has a pro drive. We ended up having to use the FPR today. Im a little concern that the GTR would not have gotten off the cypress tree we were stuck on. Have any of you ran into that problem with a GTR?

Depends if you do the work yourself or not, what parts you use, and where you get the parts from.

$5 says he asks all these questions, gets set on GTR then throws 9K at MB for an H at the last second like Rudyeng.
