 Question on longtail bearing design
Hello, I am newbie here as I have been just lurking and reading up until now. I am getting ready to do my first longtail build and wanted to shoot my bearing idea past some of you. I have the machining tools, and ability to make the following, but was wondering if this bearing set up would be a good one. I wanted to take out all the thrust load issues by using a tapered bearing on each end, with a bushing in the middle. The top end would be very similar, except the collar that rides on the inner race would be pinned in place. The drawing is not to scale, as I do not have a cad program and had to use paint shop. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Maybe this drawing will clear it up a bit. Let me know what you think? Jim

What seals between your spacer and shaft?

Re: Question on longtail bearing design
Both the inner race of the taper bearing, and the spacer will be a tight slide fit on the shaft, so I am not thinking there will be any trouble with grease escaping there. I may be mistaken though.

Re: Question on longtail bearing design
I think with that spacer, you may have a pretty high friction point.

Re: Question on longtail bearing design
The spacer will be turning with the shaft, nut, and inner bearing race, so the only friction point should be the seals. Thanks, Jim

Re: Question on longtail bearing design
Thanks guys, this is exactly why I posted it. It is always better to have several eyes look at a project. Especially when I am going into this without ever seeing a longtail in person. This first one I will make just as the plans I received called for. Then I can putz on the next one, trying some "Improvements" Thanks again! Jim
