 Backwater 13hp on 14X36
Hey guys, my first post on here but I have been doing some searching and reading for a few months now and like what the site has to offer. I have a question that is eating away at me, should I go with the 13hp backwater for my 14x36 (the lite model that Lowe produced) Lowe or should I do the 10hp. I was told by the previous owner that it could handle it but I am just concerned about the weight, 175lbs. I want the hp but with out all the weight. Pods are out of the option because the boat is used for pulling over dikes, some dikes drop off faster then others, I'm afraid of to much weight being pushed on the pod when coming down the back side of a dike with a steep drop off to the water. It has custom runners and a lewis winch chain saw mount. Any input would be great.

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
That 13hp is the same engine block as the 23hp. And they both weigh the same. If you have plans to get a bigger boat in the future, I'd go ahead and get the 23. But if you plan on keeping that 1436 I believe the 10hp SWOMP LITE that they are building is a good motor in the right application. Call the guys at Back Water. You'll probably get a hold of Jake. He'll steer you straight.

Had a 13 on a 1436, good setup, then got a 20... Perfect. I think a lot of us started with a 1436 and 13 longtail

I believe it has to do with Back Water Performance Systems from a while back.

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
Thanks for the responses. I was curious why it got blocked out too! My other question is if it is the same block, is the only difference the bore size?....seems like something should be lighter. I think the Mud buddy 12's weigh something in the range of 140 but I've talked to MB and they discontinued that model for now. I like the design of BW, they seem like a really solid set up, just trying to figure out my weight situation.

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
The bore is a different size. I believe that's the only difference. The weight of the 13 and 23 are the same according to Back Water. With the weight being the same, I'd say spend the extra money and go with the 23. But, I really think 175 lbs is more than I'd want on a 1436. I'd go with the 10hp or get the 23 and make plans to get a bigger boat. I ran my 23hp on an old 1440 and it was squirrelly to say the least. I'm getting much more out of the motor with it being on a bigger boat.

Every 13hp I've seen was a single cylinder engine with gas tank attached.

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
^^ me to. Never seen a 2 cylinder 13 hp. The block is the same on the 16-18-23 all twin cylinders. If your bliuding a dike jumper stay as lite as ya can.

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
Well I ordered the 13....not completely paid for and not in yet so I can always switch to the 10hp but the dealer said it would be fine (of course he would he is the one getting paid). We will see how it goes, a lot heavier has been run on this boat by the previous owner and it seemed to have done fine. Here is the pic of the boat, the pic was taken by the previous owner.

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
I've hunted that area for about 15 yrs,the key is balance not to hvy of a rig or one so small it takes forever to get around.the 40's can be a long ride if your motor is too small.the 13 hp for out there should be just about right.
p.s did sk do the work on your boat?

 Re: ******* 13hp on 14X36
Thanks DS and everyone else for the input. I want to keep it light but sadly the 13 is no feather. I figured the 10 would be under power with gear. Plus the dealer said he hooked the Mich. DNR up with a similar rig with the same motor and they loved it. Once I get it on and it works well, I'll have some pictures to come!
