 Driveshaft- 4130 vs stressproof 1144
Sorry this is not a super fun topic with pics. Making a new and stronger driveshaft for my surface drive. Standard cold rolled is too soft, anyone recommend one over the other between 4130 and 1144 stressproof.

Re: Driveshaft- 4130 vs stressproof 1144
Hi, I'm up in ny. I was quoted $117 for my part in 4130, this is for a 11hp surface drive running at 6k rpm. It's a Briggs animal so the rpm level is fairly low. Do I really need a hardened shaft for that application? I had my cold rolled shaft split right where the 3/4" bearing race meets the 1" shaft. At the time I may have been over reving to like 8k but now have a 6k rev limiter. This isn't for a gtr or prodrive, I don't want to spend over $200 on the shaft.

I'm not having any luck finding a local shop that can make a hardened and balanced stainless shaft. I just emailed hill marine for any suggestions, please anyone else let me know any shop that makes prop shafts. All the ones in my area don't heat treat and grind.

Buy 4140 pre hard turned ground and polished. Speedy metals has it 3/4" X 48" for about $30.
17-4 H1150 is also good, but is typically oversized for running through a .750" bore bearing and will require a light pass on a lathe

Re: Driveshaft- 4130 vs stressproof 1144
I would look at why it cracked. I build a 16hp surface drive with ¾ cold rolled steel shaft and a 10x8 prop and the engine has the governor removed so it will free spin until the valves start to float (7k +) and I have not had a problem running it. Ran through mud and rocks all last season and the only wear is on the prop which took a beating.
Just my 2 cents
