Post 23 or 25
I have a 16x38 go devil boat and I'm thinking about getting a new motor for it. I currently have a 18 and it's ok I just want something to go a lil faster and and something to push that boat better than that 18. I like the Kohler motors but I also like the fact of having a pull start on the 23. That boat is heavy and I plan on removing the back pods and keep it open in the back so what y'all think would be better the 23 or 25?

Looking for a long tail. I hunt a lot of swamps with cypress knees and logs and I just like my long tail in not saying that the surface drive can't make it where I hunt I just think it would be hard to do.

Mud slinger what kind of mods I know there's not too much you can do to a long tail that's why I'm asking. I just want to go a lil faster with 3 people cause I'm pushing water right now if a 23 can give me that I'll get it cause I do like the fact they have a pull start.

so it is not a horsepower issue, it is a Vanguard engine versus the Kohler engine issue.

I learn something new everyday.

I have a 25 Kohler on a local built LT (called a Step Out Motor).

I did not realize that the Van had more options. I agreed that a pull start would be a nice option.

I was recently looking at some LTs made in Utah. I think they use a Subaru motor. How are they?

My old 25gdlt had a pulley on the back so you can pull start it. Worked fine...

Tailfisher, although you could rig a pulley on the shaft it still needed a battery for the electronic ignition and the carb plunger solenoid to operate. I have owned both and like the 23 a little better.

I think the extra push from the 25 is negligible on that hull and where you run. The big plus for the 23 Van you said yourself- pull start! I had the emergency hub on the 18 GD LT and it worked but not with a dead battery. The 23 is significantly lighter- another plus. Maybe the local dealer can let you test drive both motors? That should settle your decision. Of course, with the 23, you'll be spending several hundred dollars less. Apart from my first, an 18 Briggs GD LT, my other three have been Kohlers, two 25's, and my present 27- all have been solid performers; apart from the cold weather starting fickiness, they have been very reliable. I hear the same on the Vanguard 23. The one real lemon I have personally witnessed was the Honda 24- stay away from that one!

Go with a backwater 23. More bang for the buck and great motor. I'm running a 16/48GD boat and am picking up my LT in 3 weeks when I make the drive up to MN. Good luck. http://www.backwaterinc.com/swomp-23.html

Just givin you a hard time, but there really is a shit ton of options for the kohlers. Several different cranks so you have the option of building a stroker, and lots of different rods and pistons combos. Lots of other shit too that I haven't seen for the vans, but I haven't looked very hard either. Just sayin, they make an aftermarket part for pretty much every single stock part on the kohler, even have (or had) custom blocks on the small ones.

They ain't that hard to find though and you implied that they weren't available. There is a shit ton of parts out there. If I had any interest in comparing those two engines, I would look it up. I owned a kohler so I looked for parts on them. I never owned a small van, so I've never tried to source parts for them, but I wouldn't tell someone that there weren't any out there.

Honestly, I wouldn't go down that path again. Moving to the big block would be a much better option if you wanted more power. You're gonna spend more money than the bigger block costs to get in the same realm of power. It just ain't worth it...

Post Re: 23 or 25
I am going to gamble that in the not so far off future, some company is going to build a four stroke motor from the ground up that is intended for mud motors.

I am not a small engine mechanic or expert, but there is a significant difference in a motor designed for a lawn mower/ lawn tractor, vs. a performance motor designed for a ATV, motorcycle, or other performance machine.

I am not suggesting that as motorcycle engine would do better on a mudmotor, but I am guessing that building a motor from the ground up, that is intended for a mud motor, is going to focus on the right compression, RPM range, weight, angle, shaft position, throttle response, and a whole lot of other factors that in the long run will work better than a motor that was originally designed for a lawn tractor or rototiller.

I would bet that if a company like Honda set out with the intention of designing the engine, frame, prop, shaft, and entire package, that the mud motor would evolve very quickly when high end engineers put their two cents in.
