Not my motor so I don't know if there were any signs leading up. We were in it the night before and all seemed well though. I think it's an 06 though
However, I was driving it at 3AM when it happened, and it was scary.
Moving pretty good through a stump field. Hit a stump (didn't even seem like that hard) and the whole ass end of the boat went hard to the right. Without 24" sides it woulda prolly swamped. Let off the throttle and saw that the lower unit was facing sideways. I thought that somehow it had gone halfway into reverse. I put it in neutral and as soon as the gears disengaged I watched the LU bubble down to the depths below.

You should have had the tension knob tighter! lol

07 on down = 4 bolts , and being it was an 06 I'm sure it has seen its share of hard strikes. it probably broke all 4 over time. and there were probably tell tale signs that you weren't aware of. Its good to check under the clutch from time to time just to make sure those bolts are tight and not broke or backed out. I had one come in for a skeg and notice the spacing between on top the lower unit and mid section was larger than it should have been and sure enough all 6 bolts were loose.
