 PD lower unit question
While getting my LU ready for the 3 piece seal I got to thinking. The question is how else can water enter the LU? Mine is not cracked and I'm changing the seal but when running the boat I do see water hit the vinyl cover covering the clutch. It might be me backing off the throttle or another boats wake hitting me while drifting for Fluke. There must be a seal on the upper end under the clutch. My 36 PD is a 2007 with low hours and manual reverse. Thanks much for any thoughts, Old Wayne

Yep, there's a seal in the upper end and if I'm not mistaken your motor has a vent in the top of the upper shaft. They discovered it's not needed and you can plug it.

 Re: PD lower unit question
You have to pull the power head off of the lower unit to see that vent. And yes on your year motor you have it. And yes water can get in there especially on short shaft units.

Mine is an 07'. When I pulled my power head to do a little work, I had a bolt looking thing in mine. IMG_1892.JPG IMG_1893.JPG IMG_1894.JPG
When I seperated the lower unit from the power head, this fell out. Like Will mentioned, it was a vent of some sort. I didn't install it back, because it really didn't connect to anything. Nor did I notice a vent hole on the lower unit to plug up. So far so good, I guess if I start noticing water of wartered grease near my clutch, I'll know it was meant for something.

 Re: PD lower unit question
Bart at FSE said I could remove it. Still haven't yet. Mine is a rubber hose about 4 inches.
