Getting up on Step - Heavy loads?
I'll start by saying this is my first season running a surface drive and a new boat. 36PD stock running on an 1852 TMT Extreme V bow, so far I love it. Last weekend I was hunting with a a buddy and I couldn't seem to get up on step when we went to leave.

Break out:
boat has front tank with about 8 gallons fuel, battery up front also, About 4 dozen decoys and some gear, buddy (330), Dog (85) and Me (180).

I was in the back with the dog everything else was just forward of center. we were in about 2-3 feet of water with about a foot of mud underneath. I finally got going when I moved my buddy all the way to the back and took off slow. Couple weeks prior had three guys in the boat and no problems starting off in some shallow stuff. Running 22mph with both loads once I get going.

My questions would be.
Is it always best to have the majority of the weight in the back of the boat at least till you get up on step?
Does the trim matter when starting - keep in mind I have a manual trim.
Does it matter if your in shallow or deep.
Slow throttle or full throttle out?

I think I know some of the answers already but considering how long some of you all have been runnin these things I thought I would ask.

Thanks

Every hull is a little different. My boat likes the weight closer to the transom. You just have to play with it to see how it runs. I trim down a little and then up as I plane off if loaded down. Gets on step easier in shallow water loaded or not. Your getting bottom lift when in shallow water.

All the short tail motor and boat combos I have owned (including current Phowler 1852 Flat Front / Stock 36 PD) get up on step easier with the prop dropped. Then I trim up after the speed increases and I am close to hitting plane. Easier to do with power trim.

Also, I can tell you that my current rig runs best with weight toward the back of the boat, like most of the other rigs I have owned. Big difference just moving passengers and dogs back. Plus, I have my battery back by the transom.

From what you described (one biggun passenger having trouble planing vs. 3 and no trouble) its probably weight distribution as the other posts stated. Just for contrast, my boat likes the load just forward of midship (battery and gas up front). If I have trouble planing a heavy load I adjust the load along the centerline and it solves the problem.

No.1 check your trim tabs and make sure they aren't bent down. The more they are bent down the more the bow will stick. You'll wanna see the nose float just a little bit or it will plow. So work on that and load distribution and you should be fine. The next thing to check when having load planeing issues is the condition of your prop.

weight behind the center of the boat, full throttle when you take off. shouldn't have to mess with the trim unless it's REALLY heavy.

Also , I wouldn't concider that a large load. That set up should pop that load up on plane like nuthing.

When planeing larger loads I find it be to,,,
-trim the prop out of the wate
- engage clutch
-rev motor up to say 2000 and start trimming downm
-as soon as the prop hits the water,,, smoke the throttle and trim downtill the prop locks up.

This works good for extemely weedy conditions to.

By doing this your putting the motor in its power band before putting load to it.
This sometimes gives you that little bit of extra ummmph to plane it out

I can get on step with me and kid and 100 gallons of diesel about 1000 lbs but doesn't jump on have to trim up a little to let rpms build up did this when was stock so two guys shouldn't be a prob is your rpms coming up or is your engine just bogged down during trying to get on step.

shallow stuff you mention on the first trip... any sand? doesn't take long to burn up your first prop.. when i had that much of a difference getting on plane since the last time out... was the prop.

First off thanks for all the advice. I think Mudd, Deadbird and Crews are hitting the issue which was really load distribution on that one. I was definately plowing so I just need to make sure I have it a bit more in the back of the boat. Also trim tabs are up just a bit not down, so they look good. Prop and Motor are fine, I measured the prop and there is little to no wear on it, basically all it has seen it mud and water, few stumps, I've ruined props quick in the sand as well so I try to stay out of it if possible. RPMs and motor were not an issue she took right off I just didn't seem to dig in and grab. I was trying the tactic of rev it up, let off then when the wake hits the back of the boat to goose it, that seemed to work and once I moved the load (Yes I mean my buddy) we got right up and going.

I also agree this really isn't a heavy load, I'm wondering what would be condsidered a heavy load for my boat with a stock motor? the boat was unfinished when I bought it so I don't know what the USCGA rating would be on it. I know I've seen pictures on here with 10-15 guys in a boat but I'm assuming thats a barge with a modded out engine.

Oh Ya basinHunter, why don't you try your trick first with your 50 at about 4000 and let me know how that turns out, for the best results I bet you would want to try that at a dead stop in some really thick stuff  :P :o
