Post grease in shaft is burning up???
my 35 mb has been burning up grease in drive shaft. I have been using a marine grade high heat grease but it is still doing it. Anyone ever have this happen? Know why it might be happening? Also i never mixed two different types of grease which i know is a no no. It just started doing this and i have no idea why

It will break down eventually. Not sure on the MBs but on Gtr the recommended time interval is 15-20 hrs and then it needs to purged with new grease.

Post Re: grease in shaft is burning up???
two weeks ago i was going to pump a few shots of grease in the shaft and i opened the allen bolt to see when there was enough grease and when i started pumping grease in it was pushing out some really nasty grease and it smelled burnt. i pumped out all the old crap with new marine grade high heat grease and only have put 5 hours on my motor and it has done it again. As far as the shaft being bent i cant see anything or feel anything while driving the boat. could it be a seal behind the prop that is worn out and letting water in?

Does the grease look like it has water in it? Water would turn it a light pale shade of whatever color it is suppatsed to be.

Not sure about the grease type for sure but its a marine grade high heat grease. The prop seems to move fairly loose. I went ahead and removed the prop and the rear seal and it seems that it may be leaking a little bit but not much at all. Where is the best place to get new seals??

I had some cheap grease sitting in an old grease gun in my garage. It pretty much liquified and was dripping out of the gun.

If there is water in the shaft. It will come out as water. Water and grease don't mix.

If there is water present it will mix with the grease. The grease will appear to be more milky in color.

Water and grease will seperate at some point just depends on how long you run your motor with busted seals. When purging the grease, if you have water in there it will be the first thing to come out. Amsoil is great marine grease its all i use but don't let discoloration fool you. Amsoil after about 5-6 hours will start to turn dark but its doing its job still. I wouldn't be too dicouraged with dark grease after a couple of hours.

Are you getting alot of Vibration on the shaft housing, if so you could have a bent shaft.

i pulled the seal cap off and there was some water in the seals and the grease also had water in it. I also found a spring outside of the seal which is suppose to be in the the seal.
