27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
Other than seeing a difference in the mud has anybody noticed any other benefits to the longer out drive? Looking at pros and cons. Some say the longer out drive is faster? Anybody run 'em on the same motor and see any substantial results?
Thanks

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
They are slightly faster due to the flatter drive angle. The down side is slightly more tiller torque and reduced maneuverability.

I would say if you are running your boat in arkie, get the 27 out drive. It drives like an outboard and you wont be dogging much deep mud up there.

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
You can get more lift out of the bow of the boat when running a 32", shaft runs more parallel with the water, at least with the modified motors you can see it a little more at higher speeds. I've always ran 32" shafts on all my motors.

Thanks. I'd like to run both just to see. The only GT I've ran had the 32. I'd like to see the difference in tiller torque on the same set up.

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
so nobody thinks the 32 would benefit getting the ass end high centered enough that the extra 5 inches would help get to the water? i could see several benefits to running the longer drive and not just running mud. i prefer the 32, i dont anything where the 32 would make anything worse

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
When I ordered my GTR35, I was going to get the 32", but guy I talked to at GT actually talked me out of it. I'm not running any mud though--just shallow weedy areas with the occasional log/stump and rock. I was going to get 32" because others have said you get better load carrying ability, better top end and slightly better hole shot. Never driven one though.
You also can't get a sand/rock guard for 32" unless you get one of Bigrich's fab'ed ones.

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
When i first bought my motor it had a 27", ran it for maybe 20 hours and then upgraded to the 32". No speed gains no hole shot difference nothing like that, where it did shine was in deep mudd, reaching out and touching water if high centered, and i like the way it Lifted my bow when running higher speeds. I didn't have problems when i had the 27 don't get me wrong but the problems that i did have the 32" bailed me out. DO you need it no you don't, is it a plus on a mudmotor yes it is. But if running deep water and lillies and shallow areas, hard bottoms all the time i don't see you needing it.

I like mine for getting on stumps. Seems a little easier getting off of them but I've never owned one with a 27" drive. Im sold on the 32".

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
id say if there is a possibility you may need it get it.. its something that wont really hurt you, but can only help in deep mud. also on the wider boats it pushes the prop past the wake into less turbulent water.

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
I here people say a 32" is better in hard bottoms. Negative on that. I also here they are better in thick water Lillie's negative on that also. I fine in thick veggies with the 32 it don't let your rpm's turn up because its don't have any cavitation to get those rpm's up. Just a few things I've noticed

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
Correct, $350 when ordered new, $1000 later down the road.
On my 1754, my 1st motor had a 27" then I went to 32" on every motor since then. Honestly, the ONLY 2 differences I saw were digging deeper in bottomless mud & increased tiller torque. If you're running nothing but Arkie timber, I'd suggest the 27" & use that $350 towards shells this season.

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
I run timber and went with the 32" drive And yes it has a good bit of tiller torque but nothing that can't deal with! Most guys say don't need it where I live but if I can gain speed 300-350 isn't much to pay...

Gtr should make a 29.5" shaft standard. This would give the best of both worlds.

Re: 27 vs. 32 inch out drive GTR 35
now do the geometry from the different pin positions.....top pin with long shaft does great in shallow water with the 32".....drop it down to the bottom pin to dig out of bottomless mud. in really skinny water, you want the boat as level as possible....you dont want the bow to barge or the stern to squat and drag bottom. I like the extra reach the 32" gives me. the tiller torqe tab on the skeg eliminates the tiller torque and balancing the load eliminates the boat wanting to pull and having to stay on the tiller hard. If i didnt have to run mud flats i prolly would not have invested in the longer outdrive because the only advantage i see is in straight mud. But I also dont see any disadvanteges to having the 32 over the 27......
