Post Does this look right?
I have just recently bought a new mud motorl and took it out to the marsh the other day. This may sound obvious to yall but only side of the mud motor has screws to screw into my transom. Do I want the screws inside or outside the boat? Also since I going from an outboard, is it normal that the transom mount is so shallow? My outboards mount came much farther down the transom than this mount so it just makes me nervous sitting at the top of the transom so high.
The main reason I am asking is because I drove around for a while and once I stopped in a cove to check gps cords, I moved around in the boat and the motor fell off! Yea, fell 10ft underwater in the swamp! I got in, rowed back to the dock and after a couple days of drying and cleaning everything out, it is working again.. but I dont want to go through that while im out hunting or in the dark!

You can shove a couple squirrels in there and have a hell of a cage fight.

You gotta rig some kind of bolt to go threw the transom

I agree, it is not the most solid and stable mount. I am attaching another picture ( kinda blurry ) but it does show you that there are screws on one side of the mount and on the other side is just a solid plate. Are you saying that I need to get two holes into the transom and screw in the screws to just press against the back plate? Or something else in mind? On my outboard I had larger cone-like ring that gave more surface area when screwing into the transom.. would it be better to add that or just make two holes and screw against the back plate?

Get mount built to where it wraps transom inside and out. Then bolt that bitch thru and thru transom.

To answer your question - yes, you have the mount pointed the correct direction - you want the screws towards the inside of the boat.

To further was has been touched on, with the motor already mounted - you need to drill at least 1, if not 2 holes through the mount and transom to securely bolt the mount to your transom. This way the bolts are acting as a security to keep the motor on the transom. Those screws will loosen (you already found that). Put the bolt heads on the outside of the boat, the nuts on the inside - if you use fender washers (usually 2-3 times the diameter of a normal flat washer) under the nut, you will add to the clamping force of the bolts.

Also, you should seriously consider having the mount extended "weld more material on" - this increases the surface area of contact of your mount to the transom - spreads the force over a greater area, all the force in the setup you have now is pinpointed to the little area the mount actually covers. The rear "plate" of the mount on my 25hp is 9" wide and 8" tall

That's a Thai motor mount. SPS is stamped on the motor mount. Probably not rated for that size motor.

Having that peice pf wood under the mount dosent help your case. That is just giving your motor more play area.

I will definitely beaf up the wood on the transom. Are y'all saying to drill two holes just in the wood so the screws hit against the aluminum transom, or are you saying drill a complete hole through the wood and aluminum so the screws hit against the back plate of the motor mount?

Or also is there a transom mount I can get to replace the one I have?

Go all the way through the transom and buy a different mount from somewhere else. Is this a motor someone built for the hell of it or are they trying to sell these POS's?

It was from some motor plans.
So where would I look for a new mount at ?

even this "large mount" looks the same as the one I have. I want something that is a little longer, more surface area on the plate against the transom.

That transom mount has SPS stamped in them and look like the Thailand model mount. Google it and see what you think. Could be wrong. Its happened before. Either way I'd change it.

I saw the above pic and I am curled up in the fetal position on the floor sucking my thumb. Man I sure don't miss that setup.

I wouldn't know first hand about the T-land motors (spa) I've just heard they are crap and have seen many warnings to stay away.

How much for the go-devil mount? I mean I guess I also just don't get the difference in mounts.. so I'm not sure why I need a new one first
