Lite long tail for Momarsh DP
I just bought a used Momarsh DP. I hunt exclusively on a river with tides. Sometimes I will have to cross deep water but I plan to hunt shallow water. I would like to get a lite long tail no more than 40 pounds. All the small LT like the Stumpjumper and Utahmarsh are around 63 pounds. I think it's too heavy for deep water on a Momarsh DP. What would you recommand me ?
I thought of building a aluminium frame LT and with a 5 hp engine. What do you guys think of aluminium LT ? There must be a reason why nobody build aluminium LT anymore ? BTW, I'm not going to beat this LT. I just wanna go form point A to point B in safe conditions.

Re: Lite long tail for Momarsh DP
aluminum doesnt take the stress that is put on a longtail and tends to crack easier.

Re: Lite long tail for Momarsh DP
The problem is the weight of the shaft, prop and motor. They are all about the same, going aluminum will lighten it just a little because you have to go to thicker metal to take the stress. BTW a 5 hp motor weighs about the same as a 7hp motor. Good luck

I understand. There is not much we can do to save extra weight. Can we use a 2.5 hp 4 strokes engine without a gearbox to build a long tail ?

You can use those small motors, Rickshaw motors uses them. I have seen some Youtube videos of them and they seem to work pretty well. I'm not sold on how well they work in the mud though, but for water with a few weeds they would probably work fine. Beats a paddle or a push pole.

Had an aluminum long tail before. Broke it in half and cracked welds. Getting someone to clean and weld grease covered aluminum is not cheap. Would not do it again

Re: Lite long tail for Momarsh DP
Based on your comments, I won't build an aluminium LT. But I still cannot figure out why the best downhill mountain bikes are built out of aluminium frames and that an aluminium LT breaks in half... It must be another mystery of life!!
Rikcshaw LT have a gear reduction gear box. Do you think it's a must have for a 2.5 hp engine LT ?

Re: Lite long tail for Momarsh DP
Yes, I've found many pictures of PPF. I like their design, simple, strong and light. I will probably build mine somewhat like that. I didn't have time to start my project yet. Hunting season has already started here in Canada.
