Any helpful leads would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for a new puppy for my daughter between now a Christmas. I don't even know where to start, any tips?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
I have been in the process of getting a Boykin or English Cocker and decided on an English . From what I have gathered a Boykin has English cocker in it and some other breeds . My client from South Carolina , his grandparents started that breed of dog "Boykin" and he hunts an english cocker I'm not bashing the dog just stating what I have been told . One of my friends has an English cocker female and she is a duck hunting machine and I have two uncles with boykins ... The cocker is a very affectionate dog , I can't believe they haven't caught on in the south Central part of the us ...

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
Will this Boykin hunt, and or run tests or trials or just a pet? I have some names for hunting/trial.

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
My male Boykin was born knowing how to retrieve a duck. Great breed I bought him and I have a 3 yr old female we adopted shes great to. I don't think I will ever own any other breed. I just googled boykins for sale in texas and called the breeders until I found one.

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
Yes. Last I checked. I flew to N. Carolina and picked up a new pup a few weeks ago. Phil Behe w Rocky River gun dogs. I run hunt tests and trials and wanted a puppy out of parents that did the same, as well as hunted. He is a very birdy puppy. Im real pleased so far.

They are cheaper in SC. I got mine from anderson kennels good dogs and he breeds them on the smaller size.

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
Boykins are some cool little dogs, I have a black lab out of white coat dogs and got a boykin out of Bens dog a few months ago. She is by far the coolest dog I've ever been around. At 4 months or so she is like a dock dog jumping in the water and is birdy as all get out, she does have a mind of her own and is wild as ape shit.
Went through 2 lab pups in the last 2 years, and just wasn't impressed after spending $800 a piece, and got rid of them after they were 4 months. This little girl will be staying, and is exactly what anyone would want in a dog.

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
Two places that may have pups or know who does- Texas Trace kennels near Hempstead, Tx. texas-trace.com, the Dog in my avatar is out of their bloodline on mother's side and he came into this world loving to retrieve and personality beyond any Lab I ever owned. Also there is a family in Northwest Alabama that runs a Quail "put and shoot" operation and Boykin's are their money dogs, retrieving anything that hits the ground- They have litters from time to time- Cameron's Bird Preserve- google it for some contact info and talk to John Cameron. Good luck with your search- I have always had labs, love them but if you want more than a dog, the Boykin is the ticket- like the Boykin website says" when you look into the eyes of a Boykin, you know there is someone in there looking back at you.

Re: Looking for a Boykin Spaniel
I might unintentionally ruffle some feathers with this post, but I am speaking from my personal experience. Pardon the string of consciousness post that I am about to type.
I own a beautiful 4 year old boykin female that we love dearly but did not turn out as a hunting dog and has had a host of health problems that have collectively cost me over $8k. (Autoimmune disorder, kidney disease; the vet bills add up over time...brutal). Via friends I know 4 other people that own Boykins and only one of them is a good hunting dog. I train my English cocker with a spaniel club here in Texas and there are some bada$$ boykins that train with the group and are great all around duck and upland dogs and awesome house dogs. IMHO The difference is that the spaniel club members are hard core dog people that do hunt tests and field trials, so they were very very selective about the Boykin bloodlines that they got their pups from. My friends - not so much, they just found a breeders in Texas that had pups and bought one (assuming the dogs would be natural great hunters). Two of those dogs were bought from a breeder mentioned in this thread. If you ask around, you will find that a fair number of Boykins get washed out by trainers and dont make hunting dogs. Dont send a Boykin to a lab trainer unless they have proven they have trained Boykins in the past. They have a totally different temperment. I think at least 1/2 the Boykins that wash out could have been good hunters, but somewhere along the line they were trained or handled incorrectly and they shut down or they became hardheaded.
I think it comes down to the fact that people are breeding Boykins as fast as they can to meet demand and caveat emptor. Buyers should be selective and make sure youre dog comes from proven hunting parents and the breeding is specific for healthiness and hunting (not just pets). The guy I bought my Boykin from knows that his genetic line has propensity for EIC (exercised induced collapse), yet he has not stopped breeding that line.....Just be really careful and deliberate with your research for Boykins. The gene pool isnt large and demand is really sky high right now. The BSS is doing a great job and I pray the breed wont be american cockerized. I will own another Boykin someday but will be very specific about the breeding. If I have to wait 18 months to get the right breeding, I will wait. I now hunt a 2 year old field bred english cocker and she is a bird machine. English Cockers from the quality field bred lines have been bred specifically for birdiness and biddability for hundreds and hundreds of years, and they basically do everything naturally. All you have to teach them is obedience and what you want them to do *steadyness).
Good luck. Boykins are awesome dogs. All of them will be great pets. Some will be awesome hunters as well.
