 Re: retriever problems
Pattern blinds are about momentum. Casting is an important part of the drill, but the primary goal is to develop momentum.
Basically what pintail_89 just described are pattern blinds.
Three weeks from "hold" to pilework is an extremely fast progression. I typically spend three weeks just on hold.
You're either very lucky or you glossed over the process and didn't entrench it. I have a feeling you'll have to re-visit some portions of FF and/or water force when you get to advanced work.
In any case, good luck in your future tests, hunting, etc.

 Re: retriever problems
ive trained doing triple marks and a blind set up like a finished test, with a diversion and honor bucket.
ive done vaccuum marking and blind drills upwards of 150+ yards, throw the front mark, pick it up, throw the back mark, dog has to push past the first mark, throw a mark in front of a blind and push the dog past the mark to pick up the blind first.
drills to wear she is going to a bird and pulling her off that bird and sending her to another one.

 Re: retriever problems
all i have ran in is 4 seasoned tests to get her seasoned HR. I am confident she could have passed a finished test, but i ran seasoned bc this is the first time i have ever done any of this and i knew i would be nervous with judges standing behind me, i wanted to set her up for success, and if i would have ran finished then i would have been really nervous and she would have fed off of that and most likely ran poorly.
i introduced her to water as a puppy like most people and made sure to keep her wanting more, i even got in the water with her to show her how much fun it is and always made it a game for her to get her excited about it.
Yea like i said i just started and havent looked into the field trial stuff, if i do do any AKC stuff it will be the AKC hunt tests. but i plan on running every HRC test in the state come spring to get more and more experience and then progress into the AKC hunt tests

 Re: retriever problems
I'm pretty sure I nvr referred to myself as an expert. I even said this the first time I've done this so excuse me for not being an expert on the proper terminology. OMG I didn't "properly water force" my dog well I guess I got lucky and it ended up working out for me

 Re: retriever problems
I've learned a lot over the last three years and who gives a rats ass if I know the proper terminology or not on training a lab, it's not like this is my full time profession, no I just have a personal dog and I happend to start doing these hunt tests a month ago as a hobby.

 Re: retriever problems
Lol....Don't let AKA ruffle your feathers. He likes to do that to everyone.
I give a rat's ass because as you advance your dog, you're going to encounter problems that will need to be accurately described so we can help.
I started training dogs in the early 80's and Lord knows I've made my share of mistakes along the way. I'm a licensed HRC judge as well as a licensed AKC FT judge who has trained and handled my personal dogs to GRHRCH titles and All Age Field Trial stakes.
Don't mind helping new folks at all. And I'm in the Prairieville area. If I can help you or you want to see field trial training you're more than welcome to just ask.
You might be surprised at how we break down marking sets into teaching examples.

Yea I've noticed he does that, I knew it was only a matter of time before I said something he was going to chime in on. I'll go ahead and give him some more fuel by saying she leaps in my bed almost every night. Haha

 Re: retriever problems
Catsquirrel thanks for your info, you clearly know your stuff. Personally, I don't need to get my dog to the level you guys are at. I think a lot of hunters are like me, I never intend to run my dog in trials. 95% of the ducks we shoot will fall within 50 yards of the blind. In open water, in the decoys.... Personally I am interested in progressing my dog a little beyond this, mostly. Just because I enjoy the time in the field with my dog. She is amazingly smart and I keep reading every bit of training advice I can just to stay one step ahead of her. In the long run though I only have a couple of basic requirements out of my dog: A. Don't act like an asshole, and B. go get ducks. Occasionally, guys like me have a minor training issue (which some of y'all might consider major) and need a little advice, a nd I appreciate all the advice I can get. I don't appreciate some numbnuts (AKA) calling people "fukn idiots" because they ask a damn question. Even my dog gets rule A.....don't act like an asshole.

I never claimed to know everything, and I never disagreed with any of y'all about the potential to there being holes in my training, I'm just saying I don't see them and I don't really see where they will start occurring. And I certainly don't mind constructive criticism. Like I said before I'm not butt hurt or anything lol
