Ran her yesterday for the 1st time. Gained sum RPM's on the top end, but lost some response on the bottom. Still having some jetting issues that I'm working out. The pilot jets are way too fat and I have to make some needle adjustments. Gonna try some venturi plates to get the fuel / air swirling more. Didn't take any GPS numbers yet! It was more of a relaxin' trip with a couple buddies ridin' through the swamp. Soon as I get the carbs dialed in and have a new wheel I'll post up some #'s.

got de carbs somewhat dialed in over the weekend and did a lil' ridin'. found that the duals aren't quite as strong as the single HSR on the bottom end. however, they do make up for it on the midrange & topend spectrums. gained a steady 500 RPM's, before i realize it my engine wrapped up to 5 grand & was steady climbin'. this a lil' bit out of my comfort range ;). i tested 3 props over the weekend (MB 12.25 X 10P 2 Blade, MB 12.3 X 9P 3 Blade, & GT 12 X 10P 2 Blade) with the same results... turnin way too many RPM's & de props "flatten" out at the higher RPM's. going back to de drawing board on the wheels. hopefully i can come up with something that pulls throughout and keeps my RPM's under de 5k mark. i have a couple of other tricks than i'm gonna try on my carbs to hopefully get the low end back. it seems the duals have infinite adjustments, so there's a bit of a learnin' curve with the Mikuni VM carbs.

btw: won't have any GPS #'s until I get the prop right

1 question and it may sound stupid too the motor gurus on here :? , but how do you know if the pipes are long enough to have enough backpressure/ baffling to safely run the motor? I was thinkin of makin somethin like this for my LT and didnt want to fork up my valves and stuff.

thanks,
josh

Good to read the entire process you are going through. Thanks for being the test pilot for the rest of us. If you have the time please take pic and video as you go and post them up. 8-)

additions i forgot to mention:

BPS Roller Rockers (still running shimmed stock springs). I have found that the dual wound springs create an unecessary amount of spring P.S.I. This set-up proves to be more than adequate and will handle the extra RPM's. The rollers are a lil' noisy at start up, but they quiet down after the engine warms. settin' the lash when warm works out better with these rockers.

New Style B&S Pushrods. by design this is the "weak link". if over-revving occurs the push rod will fail, thus saving the other components. those big fancy push rods are nice, but they can lead to some damaged heads. also, they stock push rods should fail somewhere in the neighborhood of 5800 - 6300 RPM's (don't ask how i know dis  )

picked up a Marsh Mellow exhaust from Hoyt over de holidays...

at first i didn't think i would like it, but after i put a few hours on it i am sold. excellent sound & no loss in power (coming from the custom loud duals). i actually gained back some of my bottom end. it seems to flow exceptionally well and runs a lot cooler that i expected. there was no "popping", "gurgling", or back firing throughout the entire throttle spectrum.

why would you put that oil cooler in front of the fan housing? that'll be blowing hotter air onto the block. unless you run your motor in what's usually very cold weather, then it will be fine.

i'm sure you know what you're doing, not calling you a dumass, just wondering why you did that.

fixin' to roll 100hrs. on her since the build up. other than bending a couple of push rods, the problems have been minimal. this engine has been ran hard since day one and continues to run strong. got sum boat modifications on de drawing board for de near future. gonna take a break from the tweakin for awhile and just enjoy dis ride (however long dat may be  )
