Post Holy goat dog
Ok so i know labs are infamous for chewing, but the new dog is becoming problematic. I am a bit more worried about his safety than anything else. Any advise on keeping him from jumping up and removing objects from tables or work benches. I'm about to get an e collar to stop him when he jumps up to stop him in the act. Any advise would be appreciated.

Yeah he's only 5 months old right now. It came to a real worrisome point yesterday when he pulled on the table cloth till he knocked down a vase, and then decided he wanted to chew on glass. I was more worried than pissed, but it needs to stop. He has been beat several times, but this dog has a very high pain tolerance, and I end up hurting my hand before him.

I use a fiberglass whip on my dog and it has curbed his desire to pull things off counter tops and tables..... I also use my e coller..... it hasnt totally stopped it but he looks for me or my wife before doing it now and its less frequent.....ive just got a boneheaded male chessie..... but once I get physical with him once, he is on point..... he is just stubborn.

Freaking goat started chewing wood and that includes the trim in my house. I know it's only when he can't be around us, and if he has a rawhide he will chew on that instead, but damn that dog is a freaking goat. My fenced in area for him looks like I got swarmed by termites. Ah well he's a fun puppy. Oh, I have caught him in the act and beat him good, but wife told me he started at it again when I was out of town

Here is what goat dog thinks of the stop chewing spray. [IMG]http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/26/yga8u5ev.jpg[/IMG
This is what got him permanently kenneled at night

I had one do the same thing. I am no trainer by any means so take this how you want, but I found that chewing is caused from pin up energy. Before you put him to sleep, let him run and play with him to get some of their energy out. My problem went away after I started this.

Good advice above. Much of that behavior could be curbed by running his ass ragged. These new bloodlines are not bred to lay by the fireplace. The bastards are bred to go! Exercise the hell out of him a minimum of twice a day.

It looks like he is left to roam way too much. Crate him when you can't watch him. Stop beating him. Get an e-collar and burn him when he is caught in the act only.

If much of this destructive behavior is done when you are away, he may have separation anxiety. If that is the case, good luck!

Yeah it's when we're away. Or asleep in another room. He has been crated at night. I'm sure it's a separation anxiety thing. I can't leave the room without the dog following. He and my other dog play hard all day with each other. I got an e collar and have been using it. As for exercise and training unfortunately it's only once a day in the pm after work.

You may want to set aside some time to knock the edge off of him in the morning. Remember, he can see in the dark. So, if you've got a place to pitch a few bumpers for him, have at it.

Also, if it is truly SA, you vet may prescribe something to take the edge off of it. Once the pattern is broken, he may grow out of it, or he may do it on his own.

Mine did it out of boredom, so I took her for walks around the block, while training her on heel, or rides in the truck.. Both kept her occupied and getting her use to different things she never did dig any holes and only chewed a lil corner on my porch. Always pay attention to her, if you can't watch her, keep her in her kennel.

My dog chews on the wooden post in his pen. Just boredom , I just started letting him out longer each day and letting stay out when I'm home. Long as he behaves.

As others have said high energy dogs need to release energy that is a start. Mine wanted to chew at an early age 9 weeks by 12 weeks she was pretty much done chewing. First get him his very own chew toy I used nylabones, and as freaked out over hard mouth as I was Guage has the softest mouth I have seen, she picks up empty pop/beer cans and doesn't even leave a dent.

Every time you catch your boy chewing do this. First a stern no chewing, take his lip and roll in back under on to his own teeth and give him a lip pinch then another no chewing and a strike on the nose with 2 fingers. Then give him is very own thing he is allowed to chew. You don't need to light your dog up with a collar, beat the piss outta him they are smart and will catch on.

Someone wrote something like "he would pick up everything until we lit him up with the collar, and now he won't pick up nothing!" To me I want my dog to pick up anything I tell it to, that is what Force Fetch is but I want my dog to pick up things gentle and with care. big difference between chewing and picking stuff up. I drop my keys and I say fetch it up, or if I want a beer I tell her to fetch one up, hell my dog will pick up just about anything.

Since your pup is 5 months it may take a little longer to break him of his bad habits but be consistent with him and he will learn. You can beat him if you want but do you want your dog flinching at a news paper or heeling stick or be scared of putting a collar on every time you take one out? And I do use an e collar and a heeling stick just not news papers lol.

Later
Phil

Been using the e collar but not on highest setting. Correcting him has been working but it's slow going. Trying to walk the fine line of correction and not having him not want to pick up anything.

You said he's 5months? Mine did the same thing around that age. Teething issues. They start loosing puppy teeth around 6 months.
I went to Petsmart and bought some chew toys. These are the best and last the longest. They also have a jack shaped one and one that looks like a tire. Also big tug ropes work good.

This one is for toy breeds, but there are others for larger breed dogs.

The jack looks like this and is very thick. I think the one I had lasted 2 years. Threw it away a few months ago after my foster lab, tore it apart.

One other thing. Make sure you seperate inside toys from hunt training aids/bumpers. My dogs are not allowed bumpers till it's time to work on the dock for dockdog practice. Tennis balls stay outside and they can have them all the time. Tug ropes and chew toys are left inside. Bumpers and dokken ducks are picked up out of sight.
Although my dogs don't hunt, they know when I grab a bumper that it's time to work on jumping and go sit at the gate of the dock waiting. When done with practice, bumpers get picked back up.
It's all in the training.

He definitely knows the difference between working tools and chew toys. Nothing to be chewed gets thrown or fetched. It is mostly raw hide chews. He goes through quite a few. He's 7 months now and still chewing a bit, but he is getting a bit better. I am about to start ff training, so not much fetching going to happen for a while. Gonna concentrate on mental exercise now. With a bit of walking.

Put him in a kennel don't leave him out to destroy shit let him out when u can watch him only and correct him when he does wrong the problem is he has to much freedom at once you can't let him out unattended he will chew everything ass he matures and you correct him you will be able to give him more freedom but if u let him tear shit up because you are not watching him you are making the problem worse

AKA, his dog may need to be trained differently. Not all dogs act the same. Not saying are wrong but he needs options as to how to handle his dog.

Discipline and obedience should be the 1st things worked on. Everything else afterwards should be easy.

My 2 are kennel trained so well, they hear the doorbell and they go straight to the kennels waiting to see who walks in. I only have to say kennel once and they both run in and lie down.
Even at DockDog events, after we are done with our jumps, I tell them kennel and they are looking for them and when seen they head straight for them and sit waiting to get dried off.

Kenneling shouldn't take but a week or two. I've done it with fosters in a few days.

Sounds to me like that dog is bored.. either get him a pen outside so he can learn to be bored and not mess anyhting up.. or keep his mind active with obedience training and beginner retriever training.. try running him once or twice a day too man..

My yellow male is 9 months.. He is an inside dog until it hits 40-50's or colder then he is an outisde dog... Too many mosquito's doen here for a young pup in my opinion.. Has never really messed anything up but i think its becdause he was occupied.. got his Jr title a couple weeks ago, casts and hunts like a mad man, but until he got his dick wet this season and started working hard, I ran him once a day and trained 2-4 times a day only 15 min or so.. but it seemed to keep his mind busy enough so he didnt fuck shit up you know ?

my .02 i guess..

^^ i m with phil on this one..

I dont believe in toys either.. the reward should be the retrieve.. to relieve boredom he has always had this hard ass synthetic bone and 1 industrial rope.. for boredom and chewing only.. he'll toss the rope to himself while penned up and chew the bone when bored..

you have to set your dog up for sucess.. if he chews shit up you are not watching him close enough.. he does not know that its wrong to do.. catch him in the act, stop him, and replace the item with the item that YOU deem ok to chew on.. otherwise kennel him up..

Post Re: Holy goat dog
First off aka go fuck yourself. Secondly thanks for the input to the rest. My dog does listen when I am around and will not pick up or chew on anything when I am close by. It is when I out of eye sight ( my wife did not want to leave him kenneled all night she felt bad for the puppy crying, and against my better judgement I let her allow the dog to sleep in the house unkenneled),now The dog is kenneled at night. I have a fenced yard and garage for him and my other dog to stay in during the day. I won't kennel him during the day. I do not think it is fair for the dog to be locked up for 8 hours at a time only to be let out for a couple and then put back in. That is my opinion if my dog gets ahold of something in the garage he can have it as everything is picked up that I don't want him to have. He will have chew bones to occupy him while he is cutting teeth like he is now. As for training I spend time every day with him working on some aspect of training. Is he ready for field test, no and I don't expect him to be. When he gets to the point I want him to be at I will send him to be professionally trained. I am not a dog handler and I have more money than time when it comes to training him. I work abt 60 hours a week regularly and have a family to be with as well. I will not neglect my family for hunt training a dog. This dog is a companion first and a hunt dog second. He has a great disposition and comes from national title blood lines I will invest the time/money to bring him to his best level. As for the chewing it is a nuisance in an otherwise great dog.

That is what we have starting doing. Unless we know where he is and what he is doing he is either in the garage or his kennel. He does kennel up when he is told. But I do think he has a bit of separation anxiety because he will cry for quite a while if he is away from us. Not that I'm going to give him any meds I just let him cry till he stops as of right now.

U can open his kennel hold his mouth closed and tell him quiet he will learn to stop this also helps when they get excited about birds later in training some dogs get verbal he will no what quiet means every small correction now will help u big time later every thing u allow him to do wrong will only get worse later they are a joy to own when taught correctly
