Im a newbie to mud motors and was wondering what are pros and cons of long tails and short tails?
Im interested In a mud motor for duck hunting.

Longtails are good for skinny water and mud.
SD are better for deeper water and long distance as they are easier to handle.

the godevil website has a pretty good explanation btwn the two, but i'll sum up my experiences with both.

LT:
great with the harder bottoms
if it gets you in, it should get you out (due to slower speed, doesnt get you in as bad of a bind, and you can find pockets with the prop to get you going due to the reach)
slower
less and easier maintenance (less moving parts, less to break, simpler design)

SD:
faster
better for soft bottoms where the prop speed makes a difference
can get you alot more places, just gotta make sure you'll have enough room to get it back out
tends to carry a load better, but when it's at it's limit, performance drops off quick

I look at it like this: if you run marsh type areas or alot of open water, go with the SD. If you run areas with shallow harder bottoms, get the LT. It may not always be that simple, but it's a good basis for helping guide you.

And when all else fails, use the damn search feature.

It all depends on the area you run.

Long tails are much more work but they will shine in rough and tuff areas especially in the stumpy swamps. Longtails are slower and don't do so well in hyacinths because you have more hanging in the water. They are tough and simple.
Surface drives are faster, easier to drive, and can skim across some muddy areas. They do well in vegetation and do well in hyacinths to a point. I think Longtails dig out of mud a little better but the SD clan may disagree with that.
