Have a jet ready for a surface drive need help!!
I currently have a G3 1656 with a four stroke Yamaha 60/40. It is great for fishing and hunting on main channel of my river since it is mostly sand and rock. There are a lot of back water coves on my river and that's where the ducks hold of course. I am keeping my jet, but looking at getting a surface drive boat as well. The main channel on my river is a few feet deep and goes to 6" of sand in places that I would have to cross to get to the back waters. At the openings of the back water coves its sandy and then start get a mud, stick, leave, sand mix as you get in deeper the more the mud takes over. Will a sd motor work since there is a lot of sand or am I barking up the wrong tree? Only other option I have is a airboat which I don't really want to do.

How far will you cross shallow sand bars? If its not more than 50 yards at a time or so a SD will probly be fine

Re: Have a jet ready for a surface drive need help!!
Well the first few miles of the river is just a flat sand bar, but the water depth is 6" at the most shallow point occasionally it will drop down to 2" or 3" inches in spot no more than 5 yards long. When My jet boat hits the real shallow spots it slows down a little bit and you can feel the boat bottom out but the momentum carries the boat over back into deeper water. most of the time it's 2 to 3 feet deep. Can you trim the tail up level with the bottom of the boat or does it have to be below the boat to run at decent speeds? If I can trim it up like my jet where it is level with the boat I'm sure it would work great!
