 Re: Super long tail
When I first started looking at mud motors I asked a local dealer about them and he told ne they were gonna quit making them. Not sure if that's true or not since they're still on the MB website.

 Re: Super long tail
After my knee to knee with the coast guard rep this summer I decided that in order to comply with their requirement for a neutral with electric start motors on long tails that I would Use a clutch in combination with a reduction to the drive shaft as my method of complying with the new regs. It appears to me that mud Buddy might also be looking at something like this for the same reason.

 Re: Super long tail
I have had my 35cdi SLT for 2 seasons it is on a 17X54 gator trax I love this combo get 26 empty 22 with 9ft 4rivers layout decoys etc. I can run the motor sitting down on long runs handles hard or soft bottom well and neutral is a huge plus. Also own 35 short shaft motor and boat they never left the garage for a hunt since I got new rig

 Re: Super long tail
Hey 4rivers, good to hear from you! So who's making the SLT today? I am still musing between it and the product from BackH20. Spare parts could be an issue if they have discontinued this. I always thought it was a great idea- you have neutral and that complies with some local laws- and added push from a bigger prop because of the gear reduction, albeit a larger prop requires a little more water. I still think that 35 SLT on a lighter weight 1848 would be really great.

 Re: Super long tail
Thanks, 4rivers! What, if any, adjustments and/or replacements have you had to make on the SLT since you purchased it? Have you experimented with secondary props? Is the prop truly a hex hub/easy removal type? On the MB site this is not shown- the props appear to be the same as for a threaded shaft. Do you carry an extra belt on board? Is a changeout of a belt something feasible while in the marsh? Sorry be so inquisitive, er nosy, because as you may or may not know, the whole SLT introduction and field placements have been somewhat secretive.

 Re: Super long tail
MMs - with the mercury starter interupt are compliant...
Rule is based upon preventing a "start in gear" condition....

 Re: Super long tail
I discussed the mercury switch option with the coast guard rep. It is an approved option for complying with their start in neutral requirement.
Before this issue came along I was looking at adding a clutch to my long tails from a marketing point of view.
For this reason I chose to go with the clutch and reduction as my primary method of complying with their regs.

 Re: Super long tail
I do not carry a spare belt it would be possible to switch in the marsh but small belt same material as the hyper belts my Hyper SD motor has over 200 hrs on the belt. Prop is a true hex prop only thing I replaced was clutch switch that was my fault been getting good performance so have not missed with prop size

 Re: Super long tail
Critter, apart from 4Rivers' disclosures here, there must be a judicial gag order in effect, the other SLT owners were given a Top Secret letter with instructions to keep quiet about the motor, kind of an Area 51 thing. Even the one video of an SLT on Youtube was removed. Sshh.

 Re: Super long tail
Well I hate to be only one that comments on these motors I know there are others I know of 4 in my area. 3 seasons hunting and some fishing with mine no visible sign of wear on belt and trust I "lean on it' pretty hard at times. There are some SLT owners that chime in on MB forum from time to time

 Re: Super long tail
Thank you, 4rivers, if it wasn't for you, I would be a disbeliever. By the way, the MB site does not list the SLT hex hub prop. Just wondering about replacing this. As I stated before, I am driving a 2004 MB 27 HP LT. It has been very reliable and only at the end of this tenth season did I have the keyway key slip out and I had the seals replaced (the bearings were good). I use mine year round, from teal season, through regular season, and I fish summer/spring. I am just not sure I can justify the extra cost of the SLT versus a "conventional" 35 HP MB LT or the BackH20 35 HP product. Have you ever ran with somebody with conventional 35 and what comparisons can you make? I've lived without neutral for 28 seasons now. Someone said the newer MB 35 was somewhat lighter, not sure about that. I am glad they will still make the LT's. I'd like to see the hex hub feature become standard for the LT's. Wonder how the reduction gear/ belt/ neutral format would do on the 23 and 27 HP's? All the best, Glades!
