I rigged on for a friend on his layout boat. He has the Honda engine and used it all season with no problems. They are well built.

Paint sucks and the heat shrink around the chain cuppler came off both minor issues other then that I ran the hell out of it and it had not other issues. Great little motor! Would buy one again given the same circumstances.

I'm thinking of getting one myself. What size boats do you have them on and what speeds are you getting?

I have the 7 horsepower Kohler on a 15 foot 6 inch grummen sport canoe.
I never got speeds but I was impressed with the ability to push load.
3 guys light hunting load approximately 650 pounds, 3 inches of water , mud bottom.
I had my doubts when we got in the boat to leave and it stuck to the bottom. But this little 7 got us out of there even with the 3rd guy that walked in to meet us .
I don't have many hours on it but its been trouble free and starts good in the cold weather .

I have one with the Honda. It's on a 14-36, perfect for two hunters and dog, grass blind, decoys and guns. Plows water with more than one guy in the boat, running it alone or with a kid it's as fast as you'd expect, but it has torque to get you there loaded. Two of us have carried the boat and motor into some areas and dragged it a long ways. The motor has been great, my only criticism is that I need to add a seal on the top of the shaft to keep warm grease down when trailering it after running it. I also added cable tether, same as the removeable handle to the mounting pin. The throttle handle would be nice if it had a way to set it wide open and let go.
I passed people in canoes that were stuck on gravel bars, hopped up and down small dams and got into some far back stuff . Ruined more than one persons day who had drug, paddled and poled through a half mile of slop that would eat an electric or an outboard to get to that impossible spot just to find us there set up.

I appreciate all of the feedback. What's te main difference b/ w the honda and Kohler motors. Other than an electric start option? Speed is not an issue , I would just get there earlier, anyone run these on a decent size river for a small run? Or just the backwater? Thanks again

I pretty much only hunt the mississippi with mine so a decent size river and a 1436 boat. I only run about 3-4 miles one way though as well.

That's pretty much what I would be doing also with the same boat size. Thanks for the info

I'm 99% sure I'll have one of the SWOMP LITES from Back Water by the end of this month. I'm going to try it out on my little 1440 riveted hull. I plan on putting one of the 6.5hp Predator engines on it. Just throwing that out there since the 2 motors are pretty similar and I'm sure someone would like to hear a review.

I got the koler for the winter setting on the air cleaner.
it started and ran great in December for last week of duck hunting on the Mississippi River in wisconsin.
if you live up here you know how cold it was .
the backwaters motors the people are posting about look awesome.
but the small ones don't have no tubular frame that I see on their website, not sure if that makes a difference with the small oness but my 7 HP PPF has tubular supports.

That's what I have heard about the ppf frame- that it was made well and very clean, I like the idea of more hp from the h20, but I also want the frame to hold up as well. ? I can't really say from experience, but have heard that from owners of ppf.
Is the hop up kit for the Hondas a ticking time bomb, or is it reliable for a one man show?

I didn't buy the hop up kit from ppf I just bought the parts to do it myself and saved some money I did a cam (black mamba jr from Tim isky), 18lbs valve springs, k&n style filter w/ velocity stack and choke holder, 80 main jet, 140 emulsion tube, outerwears pre-filter, and exhaust from Robertson's torque tubes. Also an advanced timing key that I have yet to put on. The motor stock ran ok came alive a little bit with everything but the cam and cam then really made it run. These motors are really under powered stock and are capable of a lot more power. All the parts for them can be found on the go kart racing web sites and more knowledge on them then you would ever need on the go kart forums. Guys get over 20 hp out of the GX200 motor but with the right parts and a little money 10-12 is a safe number to shoot for.

Also removed the governor the right way buy opening the case and removing the parts not just over riding it with the lever.

Ticking time bomb not at all the stock intake and exhaust are crazy restrictive to meet emissions so I would ditch those for sure. And after that it's up to you but I have not had one problem with my motor and the mods I have done. Just make sure to keep your oil fresh, check valve lash on occasion and run good non ethanol gas.

Thanks for the info- I was worried about screwing the motor up, but with 600 lbs of folks in the boat I need all the hp I can get,
No over rev problems?
