Just curious what you guys think about a go devil. I wanna know everything about them. How they hold up how expensive it is to maintain the unit. I found a 2002 25 kohler go devil 80 hours got 1800$ locally. How nice are the units. Do they git you a work out or are they easy to control. Pros cons. Any advice or experience with them is greatly appreciated.

No issues ever just make sure it has gas in it before you leave the dock and you'll always make it back! $1800 is a damn good deal for only 80 hours.

Positives - easy to maintain, you can beat the shit out of it and it still runs and it is a proven motor. They last a very long time.
Negatives - they are not as fast as the surface drives and they take some getting used to. You have to get your set up right. Weight distribution and the use of the trim tabs will make or break your experience.

I think 1800 is too much for a 12yo motor

I agree with 80 hours being nothing on a motor.. I loved my long tail and it got me through everything I needed it to. Wear your life jacket and kill switch! I learned the cold hard and wet way !

Just my $.02. I'd stay away from the kohler. I'd keep looking and find a vanguard. 16 vanguard ran same speeds as 25 kohler. Kohler just isn't a smart choice or worth $1800 imo.

My $.02 worth on old go devils...

I own an OLD 18 hp go devil LT, with a Briggs IC motor, bought it in 1987 and still run it a few months straight every spring, for bowfishing. I have it on a 1986 1640 Lowe riveted rover jon . I run mostly hard bottom timbered river floodings full of submerged stumps, logs and brush up the wazoo. I beat the living piss outta both the motor and the boat EVERY time we go out carpin. My old Lowe has seen it's better days; it's full of dents but still doesn't leak, so I'm gonna Gator Glide it and keep using it until I can't use it any more.

Loaded down with 2 people, bows, arrows, 3500 watt generator, a couple small coolers, a front deck with 7 halogen lights, fish barrell, 2 push poles, battery and 6 gallons of gas with a GPS it ran 14-15 mph up stream against the current; 17-18 mph going downstream. Never checked it on a lake. It's not fast but it gets us where we want to go, especially seeing that nobody else attempts to shoot where we do, cuz they can't!

But as far as the go devil, with all I've put it through, it has never broke down. I had to replace parts that failed because of normal wear and tear and abuse, from grinding up logs and stumps and pushing the boat through brush and places we shouldn't have tried to go, but it always got me back home. In all those years, I've never had a tach/hour meter on it so have no idea how many hours are on the motor, but I'd bet it's in the thousands. After all the use and with it being 25 years old it still runs strong.

I've replaced the starter push button switch a few times and rebuilt the starter once, replaced the flywheel ring once after running it through some thick brush and got a tree branch caught in it and chewed up a couple ring teeth, (LOL) replaced the upper prop shaft seal once and only replaced the prop ONCE in all those years. Should have replaced the prop much sooner than I did as it made a world of difference :>) While bowfishing we sometimes start and stop the motor 50-100 times a day/night and other times we run the motor for hours at a time without shutting it down.
They are one tough motor and I would NOT hesitate to buy another one if I needed one.

The question seems to be if the Kohler is a good engine. It is an excellent engine. I have mounted the 25 on motor frames and also have one personally. It compares well with the vanguard. I prefer it to the Vanguard. If I were going to worry about any thing in this transaction, it would be - does it have old gas in it that has turned to varnish and gum in the fuel system. That motor uses a fuel pump and has a real carburetor. Old fuel is difficult to deal with in a complicated fuel system. This could be a point of unexpected expense in the deal. I wouldn't give $1,800.00 for it until I ran it and ruled out any fuel problems.

Go-Devil LT Pros:
-TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH: most of the structural failures I've seen or heard of rusted out due to prolonged salt water exposure and no preventive maintenance. A simple wash off after the salt and seasonal paint touch up will do wonders to prevent this. Wear and tear items fail with use and your motor will fail if you don't take care of it, but this is true of all mud motors and is not unreasonable.
-Great Customer Service: ...once you give them the frame serial number. They won't tell you the time of day if you don't provide the frame serial number. Call them up if you buy it so they can change the owner's name in their records. I had a u-joint problem and the lady who answered the phone got me on the line with a mechanic without me even asking. The mechanic was actually happy to talk with me and told the receptionist exactly what parts I needed. I also have a good friend whose dad had a GD stolen 15 years ago get it back recently due to GD insisting that you provide frame serial numbers.
-Stupid Simple to Repair: I hate mechanical work, but this thing isn't too bad to work on.
-They do what they are made to do.

Go-Devil LT Cons:
-HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY: all mud motors are heavy for the HP, but GDs are in the top of the range. Make sure you boat can handle the weight.
-Slow, Greasy and Loud: ...but so is every long tail.
