Post Krotz Springs to Plaquemines: Atchafalaya Historic Traverse
In the days when Louisiana was first settled and up until the beginning of the railroad, early Cajuns traversed the Atchafalaya Swamp via this historic route from Plaquemines, La on the Mississippi River all the way to Opelousas and Washington, La and parts further west commonly referred to as the Cajun Prairie. This later became a very important steamboat route. I would like to gauge interest in an organized ride along this route which would take us through some very interesting scenic and historic sites and through the heart of the Atchafalaya basin. It's a long day trip. I think the best plan would be to pick a spot to launch along Bayou Plaquemine, the day before, shuttle trailers and trucks to the Launch between Port Barre and Krotz Springs, and begin the trip early the next morning. I would get a couple of young men to watch over the boats and equipment over night.

Let me know if you are interested and share your ideas about the logistics. I can get some Putt Putt boats to join us, too. This would not be a classic mudrun, but I wouldn't try this in a regular outboard because there may be some very shallow spots depending on the level of the river. I and couple volunteers would reconnoiter the route a few days before.

We'd have to plan for all sorts of contingencies, I know, like break downs, bathroom breaks, lunch, etc., but it would be exciting to do. I've always wanted to do this. I know it's been done before in canoes and putt putts.

Let me know who might be interested.

Sounds like a great idea! It would be more less a tour around the bayous and whatnot around there.

But sounds like alot of trouble to shuttle the trucks back and forth.

Hell, I might even put a GTR on my wooden skiff again just for this trip to be period accurate, at least with respect to a cypress skiff.

I think it would be lots of fun. I know some historians familiar with the area and its historic sites who might be willing to come along.

All the way to Moran city? That would be a long ass ride. Some boats are deff goin to be faster than others so that would prolly need to be taken into consideration

If you get into the basin there is no need to go to Morgan City to get into the Teche. You could get into the Teche at the Calumet if the water difference isn't great and they'll open the locks.
