Post Trolling motor wiring
I'm in the process of installing a 55 lb thrust trolling motor on a 1844 go devil. I plan on putting the battery in the very back of the boat and was wandering what gauge wire would be sufficient. I have always just put the trolling battery in the front of my other boat, but I need the weight in the back of this one. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I usually just go to lowes and get the extension chord they sell by the foot. I use that and install a conventional plug up front. I use it for a trolling motor, phone charger plug or a radio. It is not the best looking but I like it. You can find that in just about every coon ass boat ran by the Robichaux's I'm related to.

Lol thanks, I wasn't sure if that would be heavy enough, but sound like it's working good.

I would run 4ga on a run that long. 55lb troller will draw upwards of 50amps when it's wide open under load.

6 gauge plenty enough for the job.

For a 20'-22' cable, I would suggest nothing smaller than 6 gauge.

6ga is usually standard... 4ga is prob what i would go with.. usually winds up a little cheaper than 6ga too

Ok sounds like I'm going to go to lowes when I get off work tommorrow and either get 4 or 6 ga wire which ever is cheaper. Thanks for the input. I plan on installing it Friday night so me and my dad can go fishing Saturday morning. White bass should be running.

may try calling a few car stereo shops.. some usually have decent price/foot on 4ga power wire.

Post Re: Trolling motor wiring
Well I went to lowes Friday evening and bought some 6 gauge wire. 2 wires in 1. Finished wiring it Saturday morning and went fishing with my dad. Trolling motor worked great plenty of power and the wires didn't even get warm. We fished for about 6 hours and caught 141 white bass. Needless to say they are definitely running!!! Thanks for everybody's input on helping me get rigged up right.

Isn't the wiring that comes with the motor #10? Anything bigger than that would be a waste I would think. You could put #6 if you want but if you tie that in to #10 at the motor did you accomplish anything?

I'm pretty sure running it 18' you would lose some amps. Better to be safe than sorry. The wires coming out if mine looked like either 6 or maybe 8 gauge. It's a Minn Kota saltwater 55 lb thrust. Not for sure how old, I got it off my dad's old boat. It sure moves that 1844 go devil good though.

I bought some 25' jumper cables, and used those. Works good. Nothing gets hot.
