I'm starting to lean towards coming, but I still don't have a good idea of what the plan is...

Where is it starting? Staying at your camp? Camping out somewhere? Where does it end? Where in between?

Landing at Belle River where we enter basin inside protection levee to bypass locks which we would have had to navigate had we decided to start at Plaquemine, La. Form there we enter a series of bayous and then cross the main channel of the Whiskey Bay ship channel, and into the old Atchafalaya River Channel all the way to my camp on the river located 3 miles north of where I-10 crosses the river where we will cook and spend the night. The next day, we return to Belle River, but a different route to make it interesting again. If you don't want to spend the night, and return via boat to Belle River, you can arrange for someone to bring your truck and trailer from Belle River to the Butte Larose launch to pick up you and your boat the same day, or the next if you spend the night. It's about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the Butte Larose landing to the Belle River landing by car. There are no shortcuts. We cannot get into the Henderson lake system of waterways right now because water levels between the River and the Henderson system are too disparate.

The initial purpose of this trip was to go the route taken by 18th and 19th century vessels used by the Cajuns and merchants to traverse the river and its basin. It would take days during those times, but looks like only about 40 miles for us. I could make it longer by going all the way to where the old Bayou Courtable met the river about 10 miles further north and where the steamboats would enter to get to Opelousas and Washington, La, but there's nothing more to see there than the levee. That's the plan, but I'm open to alternatives. We could scrap it, however, and just make a day of it by riding in Henderson Lake and focus more on drinking and eating at my camp after.

Ok, change of plans. We leave Butte LaRose landing on the Atchafalaya River Saturday morning and head to Bayou a Sorrel. We eat lunch there then head back but via different route. Thy logistics of a one way traverse just won't work.

The GAT is cancelled for this weekend. I'll reschedule. I'm inclined to morph this into a weekend houseboat cruise if I can get my hands on a small houseboat already situated within the levees or a trailerable one. We shall see.

Figured out how to negotiate gates south of Butte LaRose. They are actually operational, though they looked totally abandoned when I saw them two weeks ago. They are maintained and operated by the parish. I just need to call the tender to coordinate opening and closing. So this means we can go from Bayou Sorrel all the way to Courtableau.

I organize the ride but then brought the wife fishing. That was my bad

he was suppose to ride with me he learned the truth behind if your five minutes early your on time, if your on time your late. in his case 15 minutes was way to late
