Okay, I know I'm fairly new here and realize I ask a lot of questions and appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge with everyone. As I stated earlier, on other posts, I'm looking at buying a surface drive motor in the next few months and with that, would like to be educated on the history of the mud motor.

I know a little about LT's, having bought a Go Devil back in '87 but want to know more about surface drives and bet there are some of you who were in on the ground floor when they came about, so I figured this is the place to ask. I tried using the search option but came up pretty empty, so I'll ask you guys these questions. And as some others have said to me here already; PLEASE don't turn this into a dick measuring contest. LOL..

SO....Who originally came up with the idea of building a surface drive and what company manufactured the first surface drive motors? What year did they start selling them? I only ask out of curiosity. I realize there are several companies offering them and they all look pretty similar is why I ask.

ALSO; Having never saw one up close and personal; why don't the manufacturers put a simple walk through video on their websites showing how to operate the controls; i.e. trim and reverse (if they have it) on their motors? It would keep people like me who have never saw one from asking a bunch of stupid questions...

well pro drive was the first surface drive !!

Well as for the first person that invented the first prop driven shallow water unit, it is Warren CoCo that owns Go-Devil. Now it was a long tail.

Brian Provost (The Owner, Inventor, Hard Working Person) Is and always will be the FIRST person to invent the FIRST SHALLOW WATER OUTBOARD!!! PERIOD!!!

The others Shallow Water Outboard/Surface Drives motors came out after the original Pro Drive.

Brian Provost = Pro Drive

This is a little off topic, but every time I see pokey79's signature with barnes's saying: "That mother fucker can eat corn on the cob through a picket fence though!!" - I laugh out loud, cuz I know a guy that would fit that description exactly.

I told a buddy that I thought he could bite you through a picket fence. His teeth grew straight out and he looked as though he had a 'duck bill' rather than teeth. His lips never closed and his teeth were green! He has since had them pulled and has dentures.

I can't remember all the details but I think there's more to the story than what I put. I think that's roughly what happened.

Willie, Pro-Drive has a few videos on their website, I believe one shows the use of auto-reverse.

I never said you had to go to college to invent something. I was in college when this was all coming around and was just stating I thought they did something together as a class project. I said if I remember correctly. So, I was partly wrong. No need to get your panties in a knot.
