Post Yet another Briggs case gasket option
Ok, damn gasket starting leaking again. From everything that I have read on the site, its the design of the vert engine mounted on the PD that makes the engine take all the blows and vibration. Thus putting stress on the sump and making the gasket leak. Now, this is just me thinking outside the box. Is it that the sump and block are somewhat shifting back and forth and tearing the gasket, causing it to leak?

I might try this unless someone has tried it already. Buddy has a machine shop with a water jet. Were about to install a cam in his very soon. So we will be doing this to mine and his. He has some copper shim stock that we are thinking about cutting out some gaskets and trying that to see if it will help with sump leaks. Has anyone every tried a copper gasket on the sump? I have seen some that have tried them on the heads, but not the sump. And if so, what was the copper thickness used?

The factory gasket is .017"... if you veer too far from this you'll change the tolerance on the crank and cam shafts. Just have the crank gear and cam shaft milled and bond it.

Or get a Kawy :)

It has nothing to do with being on a pd. They leak on any frame you put them on and its the same problem on horizontals. It's a design flaw, they skip a bolt on the oil port side and thats where they leak every damn time.

Yep. Every time. The cover moves and eventually grinds the gasket away. Milling the timing gear and cam and just running yamabond with no gasket doesn't work either. Still ends up leaking. Never heard anyone trying copper.

My cam gear and crank gear have been milled to not use a case gasket. Had 17 hrs on it when started leaking the first time now at 10 hrs leaking again. Leaking around the oil ports this time. Put new o-rings and I have a nice even amount of Yamaha bond around the edge of the 2 pieces. Think I'm going back with a case gasket and Yamaha bond......

Oh, and a compressed stock case gasket is .017. Keep that in mind. Idk if the copper would compress any. Also, since it's an oil gasket, you would need to seal the whole thing. Once the cover moves and grinds away the sealant, it would leak again. Copper gaskets work good for head gaskets, but not really bare copper to seal liquids... I think for this application you would end up the same as a stock gasket.

But if you try it, let us know how it works out!

Rich, if you do that you need a new cam and timing gear...gonna be too much runout with them being milled already. Especially with the yamabond on the gasket too.

Briggs has out a dowel in their new motors near this port. So far the new motor we have has 25 hours all stage 1 no leak yet. I'll let y'all know how it holds up

Well the sad thing is I had 50 hrs on mine no leak. Then done mods and now 2 leaks. Think I'm going to just add oil...

That's the bad part about letting em leak...the gap where there's no gasket causes more stress on the block and case cover, and something gotta give.

But really, once you get it running like you want, if it didn't leak you wouldn't go back in there. Weld it and be happy!

Mine had an extra pin installed next to the oil ports by evt. Still leaked and the hole got all wallowed out. I removed it this go around.

stock 45 hrs 100 hrs as stage 1 and 53 hrs as a stage 2..yet to leak (knock on wood)
i check my bolts after every run guess this has saved me...always seems like a port side bolt will loosen up a tad if any are ever backed off any

I run rotella during the summer to keep from leaking as bad, but I do agree synthetic leaks more for some reason.
