building a cooler radio need help.
Im building a cooler radio and I need help on figuring out what size amp I need. Does the amp have to match the wattage of the speakers or the speakers match the wattage of the amp. I sall some good videos on youtube on how to but I seen this guy built one with a sub what kinda amp would I need if I was gonna put a small 8 inch sub with two kicker 6x9's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdvucG4NVYw the post is not about the song in the video just the build.

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
so you don't need an amp im guessing the amp cant be 2000 watts and your speakers be 200.

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
You want the rms ratings on the amp and speakers to be similar, and want the gains set properly. Setup properly, equipment will last a loooooong time. If the radio has high voltage outputs a quality 200 watt amp is capable of making double or triple it's power rating, it just does it with horrible inefficiency. Loads of distortion and will draw way more current than it should. That isn't good for any of the equipment. Stick to quality equipment, try to match rms ratings, and set the gains properly (the gain is NOT a volume knob), and it will sound good and last a long time.

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
I wasn't going to use a radio... just a rca cord pluged into the amp to plug into my iphone so id just have an amp, speakers, battery, and rca aux cord. is that a horrible idea? this is where I got that idea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkdqdJ-N2Yo

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
Lot's of people do it, but I'm not a fan of it. I much prefer to have a good source unit inline. Hooking an ipod straight to the amp makes it very hard to set it the way it's supposed to be set. It can be done right, but I've never seen one that someone else did set anywhere close to how it should be. Most I've seen they had like every damn knob on the amp turned all the way up and used the ipod to change volume. Gains should be set to match input voltage. It can be done right, but usually it's not.

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
I've got it all hooked up and it plays but only half of the song the lead voice doesn't show up or bass just background and acoustic whats the issue is it the amp or the fact that I just go straight from my iPhone into the amp?

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
Sounds like you have a crossover turned on. Set the cross over to off, or full range.

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
That or you're not making a solid connection, try a different cable if turning off the crossover isn't the fix.

What's a low pass cross over all I have is gain reverse polarity and speaker or rca. The only thing I ain't tried is to push the reverse polarity button

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
May not even have a crossover. I don't use pyle products. Reverse polarity shouldn't make much of a difference as long as both speakers are hooked up the same way. You don't really want it set in the reverse mode though.
Try a different cable (and different source if you can), if that don't fix it, it's probably just the amp.

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
It's just junk. Probably don't work like it's supposed to.
But like I said, try a different cable and source. A broken/pinched cable or cable not making a solid connection can do some weird stuff with the signal. Do you have something else you can plug the cable into to see if the cable/phone is working properly?
That thing you have isn't really an amp either, I mean it is, but it's basically the little chip that comes inside of a radio, so you would have been just the same buying a junk pyle headunit. You're lucky if you're getting 10 watts per channel clean, even when it's working properly...

Re: building a cooler radio need help.
Just buy a name brand radio and be done with it. (kenwood, pioneer, jvc, sony, apline, etc, not dual, pyle, boss, etc.) The little amps you're looking at won't put out any more power and aren't likely to have a very long lifespan. For 70 bucks you can get a decent radio, that will last a long time, give you the option to listen to the radio, cd's, or plug your phone in. Step up your budget just a hair, and you can run the signal via bluetooth from your phone, and not have to take it out of a dry box all day. You can always add a decent amp to your radio down the line if you need it, but the products you're looking at aren't going to give you any more power than just a plain jane radio.
