Post Will having a pet duck in the yard effect my hunting chessie
im curious if having a couple pet ducks running around the yard will have negative or no effect on my 3 y/o chessie. shes not a finished dog by anymeans but she knows what shes doing. id like to get a couple for the kids but im worried that it might somewhat confuse her. kinda a random question but just curious.

I have over 15 Rouen ducks in my yard along with 30+ chickens, hasn't affected my 2 hunting dogs at all. They get use to them being in the yard and don't bother them.

Some it affects some it don't I have seen young dogs that are not finished decide not want to pick up wounded ducks bc there not sure they were really shot and I have seen finished dogs take advantage of the situation by getting excited and chasing and catching them then usually refers to a negative command of no or maybe a whipping for something he was taught to do

My golden lives on a farm with us, she wanted to chase chickens and ducks when she was young. I used a shock collar to change her mind. She seems to understand the hunting situation vs being on the farm. She retrieves in the field fine but every once in a while I will see her staring at the chickens the same way she looks at a downed bird before I send her. She has been on the farm two years and so far no problem. I would be nervous of having pet ducks on a pond though, that could be a blurred line ;) With my dog, as long as I make a big deal about the bad behavior, she generally wont repeat it.

My golden lives on a farm with us. She wanted to chase chickens and ducks when she was young but I used her shock collar to change her mind. Now she seems to understand the hunting situation vs being around animals on the farm. She retrieves fine in the field even after I shocked her off the chickens at home. Every once in a while I'll catch her looking at the chickens that same way she looks at a downed bird in the field before I send her. Of course I know chessies and goldens are very different. Mine gets her fellings hurt bad if I make a big deal of her bad behavior, she will generally not repeat it after the first time.

Indian Runner ducks are awesome, a small flock of about six will keep insect populations around your home at zero.
