 Shimming a motor on a transom??'s
So I bought a 35 gtr a couple weeks ago and before I could try it out I had to build my transom back up to a tall transom. When I finally got it in the water I noticed the water would hit the front of the belt housing and splash straight up on to the back of the motor and plastic clutch housing. I tried moving the bolt to change the angle of the motor and it seems to be best at the top hole but does not fix the problem. I measured the transom and it is almost 20" but not quit. So I was wondering if anyone has shimmed a motor on the transom about an inch or so? The boat is a 16×48 weld bilt, I know it's not the best but that's all i have to work with for now. Thanks for any help.

Are you measuring 20" by hanging a tape straight up and down on the transom, and meeting up with a straight edge off the bottom of the boat?
You need to get it up to 21". I dont see a problem with shimming it, just bolt that sucker down good. My buddy had his MB shimmed up like that for a long time without any issues.

Yea, it's not the surface depth of your transom that is measured. You should measure 21" from the top lip straight down like a plumb to the spot where the bottom of your hull would be if extended back and your hull is level with the ground. So if your transom measures 20" on its surface depth you'll be short on the correct measurement, hence your problem.

Ok, I didn't measure it straight down like a plum bob, I measured the surface of the transom and it is about 19 & 3/4", I'll try shimming it, thanks

First I'll run a straight edge from the bottom of the boat and measure it that way and see what I come up with.

That should get you fixed up. That weldbilt prolly will like the middle pin once you get the transom up high enough.

 Re: Shimming a motor on a transom??'s
Because of the large amount of backyard built boats that I see come thru here, I have to shim motors all the time. I use a piece of 1"x2" tubing like most of the builders use for their stringers, so that I can get the motor 1" or 2" higher.
If you need to go more than 2" up, I'd recomend building the transom higher.

 Re: Shimming a motor on a transom??'s
I shimmed it and it stopped all the water splash on the back of the motor, thanks
