Re: Gator Trax 17x50 Hybrid Build - Progress Pics
Ran the boat this weekend fishing. I know this is not a true review of all conditions, but I have not had a chance to run it in most conditions yet. I only put 4 hours on it so far.
Boat ran awesome and was a pleasure to fish out of. Three guys 650 lbs, two full 65 qt Yetis, 15 gallons of gas, two group 24 batteries, 55 lbs thrust riptide trolling motor with aluminum riser, fishing gear for 3, removable extended front deck in place....still ran 27.5 deep water with a very windy weekend of fishing. Great way to break her in.

Considering the conditions this weekend, those are awesome stats. Was that a 30 mph tail, cross, or head wind?

Also, the new style Crossover (2 into 1) exhaust sounds way better than the old style with the removable baffle. It has a lower tone to it.

We did. It was tough fishing though in the windy conditions. I had my cajun anchors on the end of bow line to hold us in place in the deeper water.

Re: Gator Trax 17x50 Hybrid Build - Progress Pics
I just commented on another thread about seats, which led me back here seeing your boat and finally got to read the entire thread. Very nice build and finish product. Just a couple questions, what is the floor width and length from the front of the boxes with and without the extended deck in place? Would this rig hunt 3 guys and a dog?
Thanks for sharing, Phil

Re: Gator Trax 17x50 Hybrid Build - Progress Pics
Without the deck extension it will hunt 4 guys and a dog comfortably. With the deck it will still hunt three comfortably with a dog.

Here is a short 2 minute video of the boat running. It was running 30 MPH consistently bumping 31 in this video.

Re: Gator Trax 17x50 Hybrid Build - Progress Pics
Now, to put the rumor mill to rest and shut the mouths of the classless and disrespectful people who find it necessary to gain enjoyment out of others' misfortunes. I wasn't going to do this because I didn't think it was necessary two weeks later and that people would respect boundaries and privacy. Boy was I wrong! A few hours after this video was taken I did wreck the boat with passengers aboard. Some passengers were injured and are healing well with time. I genuinely thank all who have expressed their concerns and regards to the people involved and that were injured.
The accident: I was executing a left turn and a cypress knee was just below the water line that was not visible. As the boat began its turn and roll on the chine as it is designed to do, the cypress knee hit on the port side and lifted the boat, correcting the hull laying it flat on the water preventing it from turning. The cypress knee traveled the length of the hull underneath raising the stern. As a result steering was disabled as it caused the prop to be elevated out of the water putting the boat on an involuntary path of an oncoming cypress tree. I was running approximately 15-20 MPH (half throttle). When I realized I had no steering or no way possible to avoid the oncoming cypress tree and a collision was inevitable, I stepped out from behind the grab bar and tackled all the passengers I could to the floor to get them as low as I can to prevent them from being ejected. No one was ejected. Bumps, bruises, lacerations and some fractures, yes, but no one was ejected. Also, I was wearing my kill switch lanyard and it functioned exactly as it was supposed to. After assessing my passengers I was able to restart the motor and drive the boat back to the camp. No alcohol was involved and there was no wreck less or careless operation. Nothing more, nothing less.
I have also been asked about the boat. Yes, insurance has it covered and I am letting them do what I paid them to do and they are taking care of it.
There you have it straight from me. Now, maybe the spineless pieces of shit (you know who you are and so do I) can find some fucking class and we can put this to rest.

X4.
I saw the boat when I was at Gator Trax 2 weeks ago. Given the extent of damage to the boat it is a miracle that no one was seriously injured.

Re: Gator Trax 17x50 Hybrid Build - Progress Pics
I came in here to ask some questions and read about your accident.
I'm sorry to hear about the boat. Glad no one got seriously injured.
I was going to ask if you had any shots of the inside of your port side (distribution) box? Also, where do you put your trolling motor battery/batteries?

That was some impressive thinking - diving on everyone like that, killing the motor in the process. You probably saved lives but we'll never know that thank GOD.

Re: Gator Trax 17x50 Hybrid Build - Progress Pics
Good to see you back Barnes. I have had a similar situation up where we helped the guy get the sunk boat back on the trailer this year. Before daylight at just a little less than WAO & take a stump ... everyone thinks they are too good to have an accident. It can happen before you can let off the gas.

Good to hear everyone's OK and their getting you all fixed up, Barnes. Sounds like it turned out about as good as it can in an unlucky situation like that.

John: do you know the specific models of the distribution panels you used. I looked on the blue sea site and could not find the same models. I want a small battery cutoff and 8 switch box.. Thx
