Post New 65hp stock power head for mm's
OK, for the last 8 1/2 month I've been working on getting a new larger power head to work on my GTR. Well after fabricating a few things to get it to fit and finding a clutch strong enough to handle the torque and fabricating a way to mount it, I have finally got it together I've been running it for about 2 months now and put 110 hrs on it with no problems it seems everything is holding together fine. I did over build it so I wouldn't run into those forseeable problems. However the engine I am using cost $5,500 and with my labor and material expenses I would have to charge another $500 for it to mount to a mm. My question is would anyone be interested in it? $6,000 is a lot of money, but it was the only option to have 65 hp of reliable power. At the moment I do not want to release what motor I used or how I got it to mount up, because I still have not decided if I want to market it. Don't want to give my idea and design I have away until I get a patent on it. Just trying to see if there is interest in it and if people would be willing to spend that amount of $ for that much more power?

On an 18x54 I am averaging 36-38 and I have yet to load it down enough not to get on step. However I am having to trim it down way to much. I think when I get the right prop size and pitch figured out it will easily hit 40+

Well figure a stage 2 costs every bit of 3 grand, plus another 3 for a stock 35 Biggs gets you right at that $6k mark. Problem with a stage 2 is that you are still nowhere near 65hp. Briggs is junk.

I think you may be onto something. What kind of speeds are you running empty, loaded, at what RPMs, etc?

How much speed did you gain over a modded 35? My first impression is no, I would not spend that much.

With that motor on buddy Bayard's hull you should hit about 63 nautical miles per hour.

I'd buy one if I had the funds.

Would need more info and details on the powerhead itself before saying a definite yes or no. If its a bulletproof and reliable, non-modded engine, I wouldn't hesitate. Is it air cooled? V-twin or 3 cyl? is there a significant weight difference that changes the "balance"?
Lots of people (myself included) have a good bit invested in highly modded engines and with the issues of the crankcase covers cracking and leaking, blocks cracking, cams failing, rocker bosses breaking, etc... the extra cost for added peace of mind wouldn't be absurd. At least not to me. However, there will be the guys who want more than 65 HP and want to mod it would let you know what the weak link is gonna be!

I have a meeting with a lawyer Thursday about getting a patent on it. If he says I can release more info then I will.

If you are not full of shit, I think there are plenty people that would pay 10 grand for a 65hp Gator-Tail or Pro-Drive.

sounds like a great idea. Regardless of the cost there will be a certain demographic that will buy it.

I hope your new business venture works out for you, but i dont understand how you can patent a store-bought engine that bolts on top of another manufactures frame? but then again there isn't much that lawyers come up with that makes any sense to me. Good luck with it.

I think there would be a market for it. People are always wanting more than they need. Imagine going down a tight slough at 40mph, LOL, someone will be doing it. Trees and stumps go by quick when they are close and your motor is fast.

I'd be interested if it's practical on a tiller setup.

I'd be very interested. I would be in the demographic who would give it a serious look if it is proven reliable and works in a tiller configuration.

There are plenty of options out there for a Horizontal configuration. I never did understand why they still put junk on them to this day...

I hear tale of a guy that's going to the Seminole run this year with an S&S on a GTR frame with something over 100hp.

I wanna see an s&s engine on a gtr frame. I know a person trying one on a mini airboat and can't wait to see it in person. Should be pretty legit from what I'm told.
