Post 23 mbhd excel 1645
Hey guys new to the site and mud motors last year I purchased a used 23hd and a 1448 Jon wasn't really getting the performance I wanted out of the boat so I sold it and went with the excel 1645 shallow water basic. It is there most stripped down model so far I have been pleased with the boat it gets on a plane better cuts grass and drafts shallower. But still only running between 16-17 mph and turning 3700-low 3800 rpm. It does have a new 11x10 prob when I got the motor it had a wore out 12-1/4x10 after speaking with mb they suggested the 11x10 any help to pick this up would be great

I would check your compression and do a leak down test. Check your governor and turn OOW RPMs up to 4300. Is the transom height correct? I have a 1744 that weighs about the same with a 23 MB HD and with 2 guys, gear, blind, dog, decoys ect. I avg 18-19. If 16-17 is all you get with a light load something is up you should see low to mid 20's

How would perform that test? And I've only been able to find to adjust a large block van not a small block?

crank the motor up put it in gear and open the throttle wide open check rpms this is your out of water rpm. if they are lower than 4100 bump it up to 4300 just slightly bend the tab the gov spring attaches to. Go to harbor freight and get a cheap compression tester and follow the instructions. What year is the motor? You bought it used Im guessing you need headwork at minimum your valves need lapping. I run a big blade prop with 2 guys and light fishing load at 3900 - 4100 depending on water conditions. You shouldn't have too much trouble turning that prop 4K rpms

Is your motor and 23? It's a 2011 I'm not sure if it CDI or not how can I tell? And I will check my out of water RPMs as soon as I can I want to say they were hitting around four

I run a 23 mud buddy HD came stock with a big blade prop. Bought it in 2012 but i think it was made in 2011. I think the 35 hp cdi engines were started in late 2012 not sure if 23 HP models went to cdi or not. Are you sure your transom height matches the motor. Measure your transom and count the number of bolts on the belt box below the top pulley. 8 bolts for tall transom 6 for short transom model

On the transom height yes I know that it is a tall and so is my boat. I had a big blade as well but was advised to go with the 11x10 to help with heavy winter loads

The difference been a wore and new bb are huge. Imo i would first verify my out of water rev limit.

Adjust to get 4300 out of water, and retest.

The large spring in the center of the picture under the throttle assembly is your governor spring bend the tab it connects to. Honestly this isn't really going to help any because you weren't hitting the rev limiter in water. You need to do a compression test and/or a leakdown test this will tell you if your down on power causing the slow speeds. How far down are you trimming the motor while running if you are burying the prop in the water you are going to see slower speeds and lower rpms.

looks like its narrowed down to 2 things then, its either you got some leaky valves robbing you of power or its your boat but i would put money on it that its leaky valves. How many hours are on the motor? Does the engine start up fine, idle, run smooth.

I'm really thinking it's the motor myself it does start up fine but it takes turning a couple times I'm going to change my plugs and also I'm going to clean the carburetor I don't think it's been cleaned and it's going on three years old as far as hours go I'm not sure it did not have a tach on it when I purchased the motor I put a tach on it and now I've got about seven hours or more because I did not put the tach on right away
