Post Grease Usage
What's normal for the amount of grease escaping both ends of a driveshaft? I'm not seeing a lot on the lower or upper bearing cap, but I want to be sure evidence of grease isn't a a sign of a bad seal.

Also, my lubricator's spring is bad and grease just stays in the reservoir. How do I know if I'm not overfilling or underfilling the driveshaft tube?

Are you referring to a go devil long tail?

Fill it 3/4 of the way. When running, if seals are holding, the lubricator should look full. If it goes down significantly you have a bad seal. It's not a bad idea to remove any grass stuck between the lower seal housing and the top nut. It will tighten up in there like rope and wear the scraper seal and then the rest later on if not tended to.

It's a go-devil. I guess my question is 2 parts.

Suppose that I didn't have a lubricator reservoir, like a backh2o or and beaver(tail). How do you know you have enough grease or how do you know you haven't overfilled?

Second part is, is it normal to see a little grease leakage after each use? Or ideally would the shaft not leak at all?

Thanks!

On the old GD when you grease the shaft, loosen the top seal housing. We put a hose clamp around it to give us something to grip so we can loosen it by hand. Pump grease until it comes out of the top. Tighten the seal housing back as tight as you can by hand.

Loosen the bottom seal housing and pump some grease into the shaft housing. If it comes out milky you need new bottom seals.

Glad I could help. Anytime.

On another note, referring to my first post, the lubricator will look full due to the expansion of the grease as it heats up.
