 Longtail Shaft Idea
While searching for DOM tubing by the foot in Tallahassee, FL, I had an idea.
What if I instead used a 1" sch40 for the shaft housing, and instead of 3/4" solid round for the shaft, using a 1/2" steel tubing, then having a machine shop turn a piece of 3/4" round stock down to slip into the 1/2" tubing. Then weld it in place... I would also have the machine shop turn bronze stock into bushings, instead of using the part numbers listed in plans for the DOM tubing.
Why? Because I figure I would reduce weight overall by at least 15%, while being able to utilize same prop, and would reduce rotational mass by a at least 20%...
Thoughts or ideas on my "driveshaft" idea? Anyone tried it?
Thanks for your help.

 Re: Longtail Shaft Idea
I mean I was kinda worried about that... I figured it was a possibility. Maybe not such a good idea since here in North Florida mud flats aren't as much a worry as stumps are...

What you need to do is buy a B#¢kwater swomp 35 so you wont have to worry about hitting anything but flying bugs cause those.things are so fast your entire rig will be hovering about 8 inches over the water at wide open throttle. Fast

 Re: Longtail Shaft Idea
Swomp 35 on a 1436 would be scary I'd think. I am about a good time as much as the next and nothing is ever fast enough or quite tinkered to perfection, but that seems excessive. I'm working on building a longtail, that why I asked on the shaft idea.

Ya I'd say putting the swomp 35 on your 1436, you'd be mistaken for a crop duster:lol::lol:

 Re: Longtail Shaft Idea
I wish they made a solid 1" shaft.
I have to straighten the end out on mine often because of stumps.

 Re: Longtail Shaft Idea
You wouldn't bend or break it though and it'd be really light weight.
