 Powder Coating a Boat
Im looking at getting my first mud rig and if i go custom i will get the boat unfinished. I was wondering if anyone had ever powder coated the whole boat? It appears that painting requires a lot of prep work and i have a friend that does powder coating so i was curious as to how it would last?

 Powder Coating a Boat
I'm sure it would work out good but you will pay an arm and a leg for it. You can take it and have it professionally done for $700-$800.

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
Yea that orange was just motor parts, I'm curious as to how it would hold up on the whole boat, also is it possible to paint a camp pattern on the powder coat

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
Powder coating is really cheap and goes along way I doubt there's any way to camo it but the problem is finding someone with a big enough oven to put a whole boat in to bake it

I'd guess it would hold up better than paint...

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
I had got my boat quoted about a year ago and it was 1100. I decided not to since it would be hard to touch up. This was from a powder coating place in New Orleans. They said as long as the boat fitted in their oven (which was a 20' shipping container).

When I was looking for a cheap 14' hull. The tracker rep said the 2014's were powdercoated instead of painted.

I wonder what heating a hull up to 400 degrees does to the aluminum structurally.

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
They still have to prep to powder coat if you want it to last .. Like frog said it's best for smaller stuff but can and will work out better than paint. I going on 2 years with reverse plate powder coated and it still looks brand new ,, I was having problem with paint not staying on grab bar , powder coated it going on 1 year still looks new . Powder coat is way better than paint for sure

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
You could do some tone shifting camo.... probably not a "pattern" .... I bought a small parts powder coating kit and used a toaster oven to bake them. I powder coated 50 aluminum exterior shutter hinges..... very easy and the prep work was just wiping them down with acetone.... that was 10 years ago and to this day, from the first one I did to the last, they look like they just came out of the oven..... I also had a big Ford 390 intake manifold powder coated in black chrome.... that is a bad ass color.
you drink the kool aid, id rather drink the whiskey and raise hell!!!!

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
I get stuff powder coated all the time. I do iron gates and fencing on the side as a hobby. The problem with powder coating a boat is the flex. All powder coating is, is a way to put on a thick coating. It's very durable, but very brittle. The flex of the hull would have it chipping everywhere. I looked into for a buddy of mine and BR powder coating had a big enough oven to do it. But Jody the owner said it wasn't feasible.

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
Well got a ballpark quote of around $300 to have my boat powder coated and he said i could paint over it to get a camo pattern, so now just the wait for the boat and im probably gonna try it

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
Take my advice and don't do it. I install powder coated iron gates for a living and have seen what it does. The smallest amount of flex and it's gonna crack and peel. Do what you want but just remember that someone with a lot of experience recommended not to Rod

 Re: Powder Coating a Boat
Went to the local pc company to get a few nicnacs done and asked the fella if he had ever done a boat, because i was thinkin about doing a little pirogue. Well little to my knowledge not only wont they do it but he would recommend against it because unless you have a 1/2" boat. Reason being because they have to heat the whole boat all the material to at least 450. It would prolly warp the shit outta a little 1/8th pirogue.
