Comments:
I'm going to keep updating this review as I make changes to the motor and hull. Eventually I'm going to add mods to it and get a mud hull. I also wanted to do a review for those who are interested in putting a mud motor on a big, ribbed jon boat.

The boat does alright with light hunt loads (2 or 3 hunters and 5 dozen decoys) but as the load increases it takes a long time to plane out. I think that putting this motor on a decent hull will help carry the load a little better. This rig isn't perfect but it definitely gets the job done and I'm happy with it. I will continue to update this as I make changes.

I added a gutted exhaust and ran it yesterday and got exactly what I expected. No real change in speed, 22 into the wind and 24 with the wind. Moderate chop on the water. Honestly I wouldn't have bothered posting but for the sake of accurate comparison for each step in the upgrade process I figured I would update it. Next step is head work when funds allow.

Good review for those of us the do not have acces to a true mud hull but lots of John's around. Would you happen to know the dead rise degree on that boat?

Thanks
Phil

Finally got some head work done. Decked .030, P/P and a valve job.

The biggest thing I noticed was the improvement in idling both in and out of gear. I finally don't have to babysit the throttle at idle.

The next thing was the improvement in throttle response, especially in the 2500 rpm range. Give it gas and the fucker jumps up and goes! No more lag in the throttle.

With a worn prop and just me in the boat I GPS'd the ol barge at 24 to 25 in to the wind in deep water. I couldn't be happier with how its running now.

Cool brick! You would be really tickled if you put that motor on a mud hull. But hey, if it works and u happy then stick with it!
