Post Painting
All,

Restoring my Go Devil to its factory condition as the previous owner really let the boat go. I bought some PTI zinc chromate primer, Kem 400, and Xtreme Klear Kote flat finish. Painting with HVLP

Sanded the whole boat down and wiped with acetone. Got the boat primed using a 1.8mm tip and it went on pretty dusty, but looks like it went on fine. I can't tell if it's ready for the top coat yet as when I scratch my fingernail on the primer, it leaves a scratch mark. Anyone know how long this stuff takes to cure? The can says it dries dust free in 15 minutes. It was hard in 15 minutes but like I said, a scratch from my nail still left a mark.

Took a tack rag to the boat and wiped all the dust off. Not sure if I need to wipe it down with acetone before applying the Kem 400. Looking forward to your input.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1407029639.004933.jpg

That's a hard one to answer without being there. You may have laid it up a little heavy. It will scratch real easy as it doesn't skin over, it's a primer. Wipe it down and shoot it. What does ZC say about top coating time frame?

You should be able to wipe down with wax and grease remover. I would probably give it a day to cure before putting on base color. That will give time get solvents out. But if it's really dry it will probably be fine. What kinda reducer you use with the primer? Slow or medium? If it's hot outside it will cure fast.id defiantly wait a day after you put color on to put clear. Don't want it mess up trapping the solvents

Definitely put on thick, didn't reduce the first coat and the atomizer or whatever it's called in the spray gun clogged up bad. Used a small amount of acetone in the second coat per the instructions and sprayed better. I'll probably give it a couple more days to cure and then spray the Kem 400

Kem400 is xylene based and use xylene to thin/reduce not acetone

Do I need to thin the Kem 400 or is it ready to shoot from the can?
