Post Predator 420 and prop size
Ok I built my first long tail looks good but no speed and the motor runs on the gov. Here is the setup Predator 420, prop 8x4 on a 1648 boat speeds are 7mph with just me. Could it be the prop or do I just need more motor? I would be happy with 10-12 mph.

Ok Made a few changes and got up to 11 MPH. I am ok with that for now next time for sure I will use a bigger motor. Still learned a lot on my first build. Really think I would get better speeds with a lighter boat but that's what I have and I like it.1648 grizzly.

Does the motor bog down when you give it gas real fast

I had a predator motor on a long tail they don't have that much power and mine bogged out pushing a load. Check out nr-racing.com for motor upgrades. I had a 6.5 hp on a 2-man layout boat was getting 10-12mph depending on weight. I changed the carb, intake, exhaust, valve springs and I was getting about 15 consistent loaded and almost 18 by myself.

If I drive the prop below the surface a foot or so it bogs some. still powers threw pretty good . Degree of the shaft is 13.

stock jets at 1000 ft above sea level . They have some other jets that came with it for higher area. I can play with it more after I make up my mind to keep it or go bigger. Maybe some small mods. Like carb and air cleaner, maybe gov. and some valve springs also . One thing I don't want to push it to the point it leaves me in the swamp.

The other jets that came with it are small have u try playing with the idler screw turn it up a lil bit may get u a another mph and help with the boging down

I have a 1436 with a 420 and homemade longtail, with 3 guys (about 500 lbs) and 6 gallons of gas, we do about 16-17 mph. I run a hill 8x4, but i put a "mud motor" exhaust from omb warehouse, and have removed governor, installed valve springs, and added a air filter and prefilter with the carb adapter. I still need to do some jet tuning, I am running real rich and burn about a gallon every 45 minutes. But theres some reference for you on speed. Though my lowe 1436 is probably relatively light compared to your grizzly.
