I use either chrome clad 1142 hydrolic shafting or 17-4 stainless. The chrome cad is very smooth, polished, and moderately hard. It makes a good bearing surface and a good surface for the seals to ride on. The 17-4 stainless is quite hard, tough, and it wears well as a bearing surface too. It is a little more difficult to machine the threads in.

EDT-150 is a good material. Easily machinable.

I have used 4140. It corrodes badly after 10 hours running time. The corrosion - rust - eats the seal surfaces which makes it impossible to hold lubricant.

303 and 304 stainless are commonly available but wear fast.

17 - 4 annealed is more difficult to find. It is much harder and tougher than 303 and 304 stainless. It takes longer to thread because it requires smaller cuts and lots more of them than free-re machining material. It is doable. It wears good as a bearing material in bushing designed systems - especially with liquid lubricants, as do the seal surfaces in the same. I pay $35.00 for 72".

Chrome clad hydrolic shafting has a VERY brightly polished and smooth surface. The chromed surface should wear good and not corrode either. The jury is still out on longevity for me. I have 17-4 shafts out there with several seasons and hundreds of hours on them that are still good.

Other various carbon bearing steel shafts readily corrode in my experience.
