 Backwater inc help!!!
Ok guys. I got my swomp lite kit in and put it on a 10hp 14.50 ftlbs Briggs and Stratton. The boat is a 1236 welded flat with a 58inch beam. I went for a test run this weekend for a duck hunt. On the way there it seemed to be going slow and more vibration in the handle for what I expected for what I had seen on the video, but I was thinking it was just a video. Got to the blind just fine and had a nice little hunt. Afterwards, my friend and I wanted to test the motor out to see what it could do. Traveled down some small grass slews with absolutely no problem at all. I was in no way doging it because it was the first run on the setup. Satisfied with the results, we headed back. On the way back there is a long canal ride. After running for a little while, I was feeling as the motor was a little warmer than earlier in the day, but I thought it was because I was just siting closer to it which I was doing at the time. I was thinking to myself that I was going a little slower than in the narrow stuf but I thought it was just me. Then the motor killed, so I put more gas in it cause it seemed low and started up again. After running for a short time after that I heard a bad jingle and grinding and b4 I could kill the motor, a loud report came from the muffler and the motor was done. So I made the degrading paddle back to the self clearing station, got a ride to the truck, and picked up the boat and went home. Got the motor off the boat and on a table in order to take the shaft off the engine. Now I can't get the prop off to take off the unit. So now I have a 1300$ pos that I don't know what to do with now. I'm looking for some or any suggestion on what to do and a conclusion as to what might have caused this. I believe from the sound that it was the connecting rod that gave. But idk for sure because I haven't been able to get into the engine. I'm in desperate need of help PLZ.

Sounds like your issue is the engine, did the grinding come from the frame or inside the engine case? The best way to get the prop off the shaft is to take a large pipe wrench and put the jaws between the prop blades while blocking the jam nuts above the prop (dont forget the cheater pipe on the pipe wrench for more leverage)... Pictures might help us figure out your issue...

It wasn't a new motor but I bought it from someone I knew who used it on a go cart for a short amount of time. And the sound came from inside engine case.

Did you check your oil level before you ran it? Sometimes its the simply things that cause the problems.

The oil level is fine. The motor is not locked up but u can feel and hear the destruction inside when you rotate the shaft

So let's be clear. You don't have a $1,300 POS. You bought a POS engine that the previous owner more than likely dogged the piss out of. Buy a $100 6.5hp Predator engine from Harbor Freight and be done with it all.

So you didn't make sure the crankshaft on your engine matched the coupler on the frame? I'm still not seeing how this is a Backwater Inc. problem. Seems like you skipped a couple crucial steps.

No u misunderstand me. I had a 10 hp engine which has a 1 inch output shaft Therefore I bout the larger swomp lite kit. The 6.5 has a 3/4 inch output shaft which requires the smaller kit. So the output on the 6.5 would not have a big enough to work with my kit, is this not correct

And I haven't been able to get the prop off in order to get the engine separated from the shaft to work on it so I haven't seen the damage for myself yet

And I did make sure the shaft was the proper size. In fact I cut it to the proper size because it was originally to long

Also, when I got my kit. It didn't have a prop with it so I had to call them to get one mailed to me, on the phone, I told him I had a 10 hp motor but it had more torque than the ten they normally used and asked him if the next size up prop would benefit me and he said yes. I need to measure it when I get home but I might have gotten the next size prop up then what I should have gotten. Could that have been a factor Frank?

Any idea what size of prop? The prop size shouldnt hurt the engine the only thing prop size will do is dictate how well the engine performs (wrapping up all the way or bogging down)... getting the prop off is going to be tough just because as it spins in the water you are always tightening it, it takes alot to break it free but once you get it make sure you put silver never seize on the threads... it also helps to remove the prop and reapply a few times a year

I found the problem guys. A bolt had rattled loose while running and fell into the flywheel and stuck to the magnet causing it to grind and jam the motor up. I took the bolt out and it worked fine. I need to take care of the governor tho because I figured out how to use the carb to run the engine like it didn't have one and I had no idea this motor has so much power. No order it was going so slow. It wasn't able to get over 3600 rpm
