Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
Swapped out my sears foam mat for Duk Grass hydroturf. I'm pleased with the way it came out and I like the feel if this pattern better than the sears mats.

After

I'm with you, due to cost I'm about to put the Sears stuff in mine.
How was it getting the old stuff out?

Re: Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
I bought the Sears stuff because it was cheaper but after ripping it a couple times, I started looking at the hydroturf. Ended up getting two sheets as a birthday gift.
Taking the old stuff out wasn't too bad. I used one of the oscillating tools with a scraper attachment, then a sanding block. Wiped all the surfaces down with acetone before putting the new stuff in.

Re: Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
I have hydroturf on front deck & box tops. And I have the Sears stuff on the floor. I don't know if it was just mine, but the Sears stuff leaves a black residue on everything now (my feet, shoes, bottom of ice chests, life jackets, etc) so I'm about to rip out & put HT on floor as well.

My buddy put the sears stuff on top of his yeti and it stayed in his truck for a year. Pretty much deteriorated from sun exposure

if your boat stays in direct sunlight it doesn't matter what you put down.

I just put the sears stuff in mine. For $50 total I'll be happy if it lasts 2 years and I'll do it again.

Re: Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
The hydroturf I've used lasts. It's on Same boat, same sunlight but sears crap deteriorating, hydroturf is not. Sears stuff didn't last 1 year.
On my last boat, hydroturf was on for 2 years when I sold it & it was holding up fine. It was also stored under the same sunlight.

Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
I'm hoping that the best step mat will last a while in mine since it's stored indoors full time. I just wasnt going to drop the money on the turf right now.

Thank god for a raised house. My boat stays parked under the house or under the roof in my boat slip.

Re: Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
Can you give some more details on removing the old glue/residue without damaging the paint? Seems to me like sanding/acetone would destroy the paint/liner coating..

Before / After - Sears mat to Hydroturf
I used an oscillatiing tool with blade tip to remove 99% of the old turf. Then a sanding sponge to get most of the remaining bits. A rag with acetone was used to wipe down all the surfaces before sticking down the new turf. There were really no other tricks. I guess the paint/primer combo used on my boat is pretty tuff because it didn't seem to come off very easily while sanding.
