Had a friend who went over to thailand for a bit. He said he saw a bunch with inline 4's on em and one with a 350 chevy. Cant imagine the tiller torque on that thing lol

They pretty much use what is available. Believe it or not a lot of honda's and briggs there, since they are made in Asian countries, but a lot of motorcycle and car engines as well. They race over there using Rotax motors and hit some crazy speeds on some really tiny boats. The car engines usually have a lever for forward, neutral, and reverse.

They really like turbo's too

That's cool as hell I don't see how the boat don't sink with that big ass motor

Funny thing is that those couplers, shafts, and props are the same as the kits that are sold here that everyone likes to bash.

Obviously not car engine sized ones, but the ones that are bolted on to rotax motors putting out 100hp are the same as the ones sold here for Briggs and honda motors without the adapter plate to fit the rotax.

Yes, my wife has a video from her trip to Malaysia many years ago and that river boat w/longtail moves plenty fast. Nobody here, except Go-Devil, has done much tailoring a hull to a longtail- for shortails plenty have. Many of those SE Asian boats are made from heavy teak and other wood but yet they glide well over tidal flats and shallows. Many are fitted with "pods" to gain lift in the back. I wish I had a alum fab shop and I could make my own. I will have to go custom when I buy my next hull because all the factory mfg.'s are not true flat bottoms and are designed for conventional outboards. The surface drive hulls are generally overkill and too heavy for where I run because it's shallow and hard bottom and no real mud. Heck, a riveted lightweight hull would be better and faster than the allwelded hull I have now. GoDevil has a real tank in their LT hulls but are too heavy IMO. I would love a 1844 -2044 or 1848-2048 in .080 or .090 gauge. I know about displacement on heavy hulls but believe me, we have shallow water more often than not and getting beached on sand/marl is a bitch and a winch is no remedy.
I believe the Germans used them in campaigns in the Crimean marshes against the Russians. Anybody who is moaning about driving a LT is wimpy- what rotator cuff?

There are hundreds of small fishing boats in the Bay of Bengal area, operating with longtail motors, these are many times small 1 or 2 cylinder diesel motors. There is a maintenance video on youtube on these- they are simple to run and maintain- they spray them down before and after use because of the salt water but are relatively light and powerful. You will also find similar rigs in the Amazon basin area. I thank BackH20 inc. for improving the tried and true LT, wish that I had the resources to do something myself, I think there will always be a significant market for the LT, inasmuch as the shorty surface drives are in demand, there are many marshes where the LT is still an economical and efficient powerplant.
