my engine (<1 yr old gtr35 w/ 60 hrs) backfires a bit. more so if i let off the throttle quickly from a high speed. i've got the stock muffler (which is rusting fairly hard - s louisiana salty crap water) & i run da premium gasoline w/ some stabil fuel stabilizer.

how serious is it / do i need to be worried about it / what can i try before dragging it in? thanks

ps - i really think this is more specific to my engine & not gator tail b/c i have several friends w/ gator tails & there's don't do it like mine.

Just worry about blowing the baffles on the muffler and little pieces of the welds coming down into the head.

My vertical 36 did this as my muffler started to rust out. It got worse and worse until I replaced the muffler. Put on a Hopkins Hogg and it has not happened since.

My guess is that once the muffler starts to rust out, it does not have enough back pressure and that causes it to backfire.......

If you let it idle for about 30 seconds after running it hard this should cure the burping or spitting and sputtering. We have a 25 Kohler on a mower at work with about 780 hrs, nobody idles down before killin and it will do this for about 20 seconds and have the occassional backfire.

I don't have the backfiring anymore since I put the Hogg on. And my stock muffler was fine.

Mine was doing it also!Put one of E.V.T exhaust on and it has never done it since!

Mine does it. It don't bother me. My muffler is rusting too. Nature of the beast when used in salty applications. Just put a stainless steel muffler and forget it.

I have no idea what is causing it but BROOK's 35GT does it. We heard him coming up the river and my little boy asked what they was shootin at

I had one of the EVT mufflers that had the welded flanges and both of them cracked.One was almost cracked the entire way around the other had one about a 1/2" long.Sent it back and they cut the ends off and belled them and sent it back with the inserts.Only time will tell now.

My 23 gdsd wit 22 hours burps on me when I cut it off.

Man i spent hours wondering how to stop this issue and did some research, basically what i was told.... whats happening when it back fires (like mine was) is you're goin from full throtle to nothing so the carb loads up with fuel and it has to be burnt in some way aka backfire... what i did to cure mine is let off slow not real slow but easy, dosent do it near like it was (still a little pop here and there) also, i'd get a new exhaust the factory ones will give you problems, and as for the gas mine backfires worse on high octane, go for 89 (my opinion). good luck

dog walker, if i were to get a new muffler, what would you recommend?

my friend's evt had brackets on both sides of the muffler (remember, he's got a gator tail like me). the pictures at looks like they are only on the tail pipes - unless this is a model for a prodrive/mudbuddy/go devil.

i've heard about changing the inside of the can, but that will just rust again if it's not stainless, right? i think myrtle grove is completely ridicuously salty. i know these stainless customs are a complete rip, but i guess i'm gonna waste the $ - hell i've already wasted enough. clamps suck & i think will come loose at one point or another. i've heard the evt is just a car muffler & the clamp crap is just so it will fit different applications. i ain't paying this much for clamps that are probably going to be trouble. i spoke w/ backwater performance systems (think it's a part of mud buddy) - you can't use their single crossover on the gator tail b/c it'll burn up the top cover of the motor (not the air filter cover, but something else). their twin stainless fits, but you need to make different mounting brackets. so that's an option.

f***. the twin stainless comes too close to the plastic transmission housing. the connecting bracket needs to be cut & spaced further out - couple hundred bucks on top of an already overpriced piece of metal. maybe it's better to just change our the inside of the can every season w/ a $5 piece of pipe.

I understand how u feel bout the cost of an EVT muffler. I pad $120 for the hughe Magnaflow stainless steel muffler that is on my 2500HD. It is like 6" tall and 23" long.

If you get one of the old BPS pipes for a deal you'll wanna read the DIY section listed on my site as deadbird noted. They are a good performing exhaust but had a weak link which were the baffles. It was only welded in with 4 tabs instead of a solid weld all the way around. This caused it to vibrate itself apart.

The pic will give you a good idea on how to make one but most guys who have made their own from scratch end up wishing they hadnt.

I would suggest staying away from the Hogg unless you can find a smokin deal on one, under $300.

Ive seen the EVT but havnt run them. Look well built and have a good warrenty but you pay extra for it.
