Post Camo Dip Radar Dome
It's come time to update the electronics on my offshore boat, so I'm considering putting the old radar on my mud boat. It's a 24 nm range Furuno with 18" dome and LCD screen. It may be unnecessary, but I've been out multiple times when it would have been nice to have (fog). I just feel like I'd rather use it than put it in a box to collect dust or sell it for pennies, and as much as I like redundancy, it would look stupid to have two radars on a T-top...

Anyway, I'm thinking I would need to put a "radar arch" over my motor, similar to a poling platform to mount the dome on. I know that you're not supposed to paint the front window on an open array radar, so I'm assuming that you shouldn't paint a radar dome either. That said, the white plastic dome is easily removable, and would be easy to camo dip. I'm just wondering if that would affect the radar's performance. Anybody know?

It'll spot frogs, but you gotta wrap them in tin foil first. As much as I like the URNGE idea, I may stick with camo... I wouldn't wanna be the first one to do URNGE!

Boatdr has done a few radar setups for some of the Venice guys. He had some pictures somewhere of a couple different mounting ideas he used. You might give him a call if you're looking for ideas.

Somehow I hadn't thought of that. If you'll notice though, I had already ruled out painting it. My question is: Would camo dipping it affect anything? Like you do to a gun.

Just so y'all know, Furuno says on their site that radar arrays can be painted... Based on this info, I'm guessing a camo dip would be fine. I may still call BoatDR to see what mounting configurations he's come up with. Hunting Venice was one of the main reasons I thought this might be a good idea.

Furuno:

Question

Is it okay to paint my radar antenna?

Answer

Yes, it is okay to paint your radar antenna. However, the paint MUST be epoxy-based with NO metallic ingredients. Paint with metallic ingredients will cause poor performance and possibly damage to your radar.

Please add it to your boat. You need all available navigational aids when you drive. Insert smiley faca here.

I don't think the film will mess it up. Is it possible to get another cover if it does mess up? Seems like a trial and error deal.

Seems winegard camos theirs. Actually, this is an antenna but I think it could work with a radar also.

It will not hinder the radars performance, The dips film wouldn't be an issue do to it being water soluble and when sprayed with the chemical activator it dissolves, Just the ink is left and is only a few microns thick. Which is a lot thinner than the vinyl letters already on it. You said that you didn't want to paint it , but you will still need to, because it has to have a clear coat of urethane to protect it.

Only took over a year, but I got it done. Still gotta weld a base for the radar dome, but the electronics panel came out great and the camo dipping of the dome and dust covers is slick...

Looks damn good. It don't matter what boat you have running fog is one of the most dangerous things you can do on the water, especially where you hunt. Good job coot

It'll be mounted on a poling platform. Gotta build it first though.
