Post Go-Devil Boat with GTR
Hey y'all. I've been planning out a mud rig for a while now, got a 2015 35GTR a couple months ago, and now I'm starting to look into boats. I've got a Go-Devil dealer near me and they've got a bunch of boats and they've managed to catch my interest. I've got a few questions about them that I'm hoping y'all can answer (not saying I don't trust boat dealers, but they are trying to sell me something).

1) Does that tapered transom play nice with the GTRs?
2) They claim the 1660 is the fastest hull, but that seems to conflict with the 1848 standard. Can anybody weigh in on this? Does it slide as bad as i feel like it would?
3) Has anyone run the 1844? I like the round chine, but it seems narrow and a little tippy. Has anyone run one that can say how stable they are?
4) Any other words of wisdom on the subject?

The jury is still out on boats. The price is just so good on the go-devils that I feel like i should look into them a little more than standing in the showroom.

running a modded GTR on a 1660 gdsd hull, yes it slides horribly bad. Hull is too short, it porpoises very badly when empty/loaded lightly. I would opt for an 18', and probably go with a gatortail hull over the go devil hull. Storage sucks donkey-balls in the 16' gdsd hulls due to the short boxes. We cut the foam out the bow for more storage and to get weight up front, and also removed
The boxes in the rear. Lots of room, just boat is too short overall

Nothing against Go devil but if your getting a GTR go with a custom builder or Gator-Tail

Rounded chimes suck with a SD! As for the GD 18x44 I wouldn't put a surface drive on it. I run a 18x44 with a LT, perfect set up..... IMO, I like a GD hull, strong, heavy, and is a tank! I'm not into speed!!!!!

My 1848 does not slide bad at all. I love the tapered chines. I absolutely love my boat. The 1660 is nice but it does not handle a load as well as my 1848. if I buy a different brand motor, I will put it on my 1848 GDSD boat.

I also get decent speed out of my stock motor on the 1848. I run 27.5 to 28.5 MPH in the lake

Thanks for the insight y'all. I guess I need to get out and ride one of the 1848's. I'm also looking at gator tail, gator trax, or having brother build me one. It's still up in the air.

Just to make sure, the tapered transom on the go-devil hulls doesn't cause any weird problems with GTRs (porpoising, blowing out the prop, etc?)

well my buddy ran the 16x44 for a long time it was the long tail version with the short transom so he had a short transom gtr on it and it out performed most boats around here and turned on a dime now he has the 16x60 and the only complaint he has with it is it will not turn it just slided

Well,
I have yet to see much a difference in my GD boat in shallow water compared to the GTR boat my business owns. So I am pretty fucking sure my tapered chines and cut back transom works just fine. My boat turns much better than the GTR we have at work. In closing, buy whatever you want. Round, tapered and squared all serve a purpose. My preference is a tapered. Others like squared or round. 95% of the time they will all work in any condition you will find yourself in unless you are horsing around. it is all about your opinion and what your prefer.

I would be surprised to find out that there is any noticeable difference between a round chine and a triple+ taper chine. And I feel like and boat with any kind of taper or rounding in the chine is going to slide in mud.

I can tell you with certainty - a modern GD 1844 with 35 GDSD turns sharp with
minimal slip in 2" water over slop as compared to it's tapered GD 1848 brother
which is a few mph faster with a tad less draft....

All this talk about this chine or that chine - is just talk - there is a hellovalot that
goes into the design of a hull that the average eyes will never see.... If I told you
that my rig turns because of the way the nose bites - that comment would be
lost on 90 percent of those on this thread.... But because of that hellovalot of
R & D not just the GD but several other rounded and or multi-chined hulls will in
fact turn reliably and with laserlike precision in skinny water where most hulls
just slide out of control.... I will give up a few mph to get control like this because
at dawn when driving hard to a good spot I like to know that my rig will go exactly
where I steer it....

You have to drive them to find out what is really gonna work for you and your area !

Post Re: Go-Devil Boat with GTR
I've seen all the videos and I've read every thread for the past 6 months on here. I've got a good working knowledge of these boats/motors and I'm more than comfortable with all of the points that have been made. Having said that, It's funny that you can feel confident with what you know, but it's so hard to make a decision when it comes down to actually getting a boat. That's what I'm really struggling with right now. Right now what I've narrowed down is:

-Flotation (must)
-1848 (roughly, +/- 6" length and +/- a couple inches in width)
-Tapered or round chine (i don't think the GTB Extreme chine will cut it, unless they've updated them a lot since the boat I went for a ride in was made, maybe someone can weigh in on this)
-Hunt deck (maybe, I like that it's going to get a lot of foam out of the floor space of the boat, and I like having a place to knock mud off that isn't inside my boat all over my decoys)
-3/16" bottom (still debating this one. Not sure if it's an absolute necessity where I'm at)
-Poling platform (removable, but nice to have it done by the boat builder).
-As open of a floor plan as I can get (I have just under-deck storage in my current boat and I can get it done just fine with that. BUT the split bench in the go-devil doesn't bother me much).

I would go custom but my concern is with the flotation. I have a very strong want for a Prodigy but him being in GA and me being in SETX makes the logistics seem like a nightmare. I have talked with Brother and he seems like a solid guy but again, flotation.

I know this is kind of off the course of this thread, but I'll just put it here so I don't start another one and clutter up the section, what would y'all advise I do? I'll be running this boat both in trinity bay/anahuac/marshes, as well as up the trinity in a bunch of backwaters upstream of Livingston/the jungle. And again, I have a low-hours 2015 35 GTRL sitting in my garage to hang off of whatever boat I choose.

I run the same area....

Poling platform is a huge safety plus in narrow bayous - it protects both motor and
driver from tree limbs up side the head and adds safety in that the driver can not get
knocked out the back of the boat or slip and fall toward the prop...

Catwalks are incredibly handy and do not cost you any usable floor space when
built from gunnel to directly above where your floor connects to the hull...

Front deck extension is incredibly handy and when you cover your tanks and battery
only cost you a small amount of floor space...

Lastly - don't buy anything until you have driven it in your area ! ! !
