What size boat for 50 outboard?
Got a good deal on a 05 50hp yamaha 2stroke now I want to build a boat for it. It's a 25 inch shaft so I'll prob build a hunt deck and raise it up. thinking center console. Will mostly be a basin fishing rig no duck blind in this one. What's a good size hull to carry 3 people and gear for a outboard? Wanting to go all 1/8 for lightness and speed.

Re: What size boat for 50 outboard?
I've got a 20x46 3/16 bottom crawfish skiff I built with a 50 hp Suzuki 4 stroke on it. Runs in the low 30's and will jump on step with 4 grown men loaded down with gear and ice chest.
Got a buddy who I built a 1748 for, heavy built double bottom rig for a 35 prodrive, that runs a 50 Yamaha 4 stroke on it in the summer and his is running upper 30's, and also will get on step easy with a heavy load. I would guess you would probably see even better speeds with the 50 2 stoke.

If you are just wanting a fishing rig or run and gun setup, I was told that a 1556 or so hull is ideal for a 40-60. It was also mentioned that you loose about 3mph per foot after 15ft. This was from a APBA record holder.
My 1848 flat runs 38mph with a well tuned 40 Merc fwiw.

Instead of building a boat to suit a motor, build a boat to suit the type of hunting/fishing that you do. If that tall 50hp doesn't match up well with the boat, then sell that motor and buy one that does. Don't let the tail wag the dog.

My 1648 with a johnson enforcer 55 horse runs 37-42 depending on load and what prop I have on it. It weighs about the same as that Yamaha and I would imagine you would see similar performance numbers.
