removing governor? what are your thoughts?
For those that built their own longtail (I don't know if people remove them on prebuilt ones) did you remove your governor or decide to keep it and why? Im thinking about removing mine but I have doubts on safety.

Re: removing governor? what are your thoughts?
I'd like to remove our governor Scott, he's a real schmuck, but guess that's unconstitutional and the sad electorate who put him in office will get riled up. I tricked up my out of water rpms to 4200 and it was a cheap mod.

Re: removing governor? what are your thoughts?
What do you think you're gonna gain by removing it? Just set it a few hundred rpm's over where you can actually run it under load. If your motor can turn 4k in the water set it at 4300, if it can turn 4300 set it at 4600... Removing it completely really doesn't make much sense in this application. Go karts don't have to worry about hitting a stump, or sandbar, or log, or beaver dam, or any other obstruction causing the prop to fly out of the water and over-rev the engine, you do.

Re: removing governor? what are your thoughts?
Mine is removed... I dont like the centrifugal hard to adjust governor. Id rather have a set screw stop on my throttle linkage that works like a reverse idle adjustment. Then I can set a physical throttle stop to limit over reving.
WHat rpm is yours limited to currently?

Re: removing governor? what are your thoughts?
You want to be able to run at full throttle. I wouldn't want to limit the movement of the butterfly if that's what you're saying. That would be leaving a considerable amount of power on the table.
Limiting the throttle wouldn't really help anyway. If the motor is under load at half throttle it may run 2k rpm's, but not under load (if it is unintentionally popped out of the water), it may over-rev, even at half throttle.

Re: removing governor? what are your thoughts?
You want some wiggle room, as the gov will start to pull back on the throttle before it reaches it's hard limit. That will affect you under load, but if you set it a few hundred more than you can actually run it, you'll still be safe if you hit something or at least a lot safer than having no protection at all. If you think you can run 4k, turn it up close to 5k and go run it. If you can only run 41-42, set it at 44-45 and you should be fine. If it knocks you back down to 4 or you feel like it's limiting you, turn it up a little more. I had mine set around 5k and it would let my motor spin up to 48+ easily in the water, but set to 47-48, it wouldn't really run above 44 or so under load. You'll have to play with it a little, but I really don't see the point in removing it unless you're changing to a carb that is not compatible with the linkage.

Re: removing governor? what are your thoughts?
My first thought was here goes another politics thread about impeaching a governor.
